Your choice for STL

Getting ready for a transmitter move and curious what folks here are using for an STL these days. Looks like we have wide open options as we have direct, line of sight over about three miles. We've been using an IP link over public internet until now due to LOS issues. Just wondering what the brain trust thinks is the best option might be. Of course budget conscious choices are always welcome ;)

AM and FM translator feed from a co-located site. No HD with a single channel. Unrated market. Sorry I didn't include that in the original post.

If I understand this right, an AM with an FM translator. Assuming two different paths

Two pair of STL-10's. Many available used, Rick Neace at www.rpu-stl.com has transmitters for sale (rebuilt) under $900. I presume he can rustle up matching receivers for the same price.

Then have RF Licensing Tulsa coordinate for you--$450/channel as I remember including filing fee. Total cost: Under $5K. plus antennas

Advantages: You own the system once built. No on-going fees to telco or other entities. If a fuse blows after a storm--you go change it. Don't have to call for service to someone 3 states away. No digital delay, audio quality excellent. No mysterious popping/glitching etc.--it's an FM signal, simple, proven technology.

Disadvantages: It's not digital, so in today's world there must be something wrong with it.

Great comment, Tom... Instead of troubleshooting hums and ground loops, now it's AES data errors and clock sync. Same number of problems... They are just different.

If you're in a unrated market, you want to generally RUN from telco digital services. The best and cheapest option for you is an analog stl one IMHO. PayIng a little upfront will give you a decade or more of reliable service without hassles.
