Your Fave Central PA Gig

11/'93 - 1/'96 WHTF-FM (Starview/York). PT / Swing position.

This was the "Solid Rock 92.7 Starview" era of Heritage Rocker WRHY-FM / WHTF-FM.
Active Rock format, casual air studio, decent money, passionate listeners, etc.

Most [if not all of] the SR927S air staff:
Todd Brandt, Mike Tyler, Jim Cooke, Dina Wagner, Dave Crockett, Dave Powers, Carol Seidel,
Steve Knight, Uncle Igor, Alan Roberts, Gina Rockey, Doug Patton, Gwen F., Chris Kelly, Booger,
Bill Hanson, Crack, Finn X, Kevin Beam, BoMac, Bill X, Michael Smith, Kathy X, Bubba, Sean X.

Various tidbits:

* Five 'o Clock Rush (win free beer)
* Free for All request show (Mon. through Sat.)
* The Metal Meltdown w/ Uncle Igor
* Sunday Night News w/ Bill Hanson
* High Voltage (syndicated Metal / Rock concerts)
* Best of the Bands (local music program)
* Battle / Best of the Bands competitions
* The Solid Rockettes (local models)
* Songs That Suck weekends
* Songs That Don't Suck weekends
* Dina's Solid Rock Report
* hosted shows with Tesla, Ronnie James Dio, Kix, local bands, etc.

Don't recall the details of the final promotion, but the prizes were AC/DC's
new "Ballbreaker" CD, and $100 for your December electric bill.

During January '96, that Friday when Central PA flooded, we flipped to 92.7
The Eagle. Seven of us were hired (6 air staffers, 1 sales) to launch WEGK;
the new studio located in the new owners' Lancaster HQ.

The air studio (Arrakis system, five Denon CD players) and production studios
were great. It was better money and whatnot, but six months was enough.

James Dean , James Dean ...... (Oh, and don't forget the Dr. Demento Show!) Actually, I guess those were before 'Solid Rock'. Oh well, still good times.

Then there was Igor's Grateful Dead-themed The Dead Zone.
He also hosted a Metal show around '86, which may've been
the show once hosted by Krankin' Keith.

And let's not forget the syndicated "MetalShop - The only
show with teeth." Also, Flashback.

>Actually, I guess those were before 'Solid Rock'.

Yeah. I believe that Eagles loop was the '89 flip to Classic Rock.

> Oh well, still good times.

It's cool that folks remember the station.

The other York flip that year (circa November) was WQXA-FM;
from CHR to Urban/Dance to become Hot 105.7. The loop for
that was The Power Station's "Some Like It Hot."

WOW, I'm amazed someone remembered I worked there aside from me. I was hardly ever on there, you had to be paying attention to notice I was there! I did the "Best of the bands" show for a short time leading up to the big switch to the Eagle.

My favorite gig would have to be either the Mid day gig at WWII (Pre religious), I'd get to play anything from Joe Walsh, Perry Como, Grateful Dead and Sinatra... It was surreal, I was sandwiched metween Mac Macauley and Dave Herlihy.

Or the time I spent at WTPA. That was a thrill ride.

I really dug my weekend shift I did at 93.5 WTPA.
One reason was because I got to see 92.1 go from a WTPA simulcast to BIG 92.1 and then after a couple of months, go to HOT 92.1. The other reason was because in addition to my airshift, I got to produce the Hershey Bears Games on 92.1
so occasionally Dave Michkin would hook me up with free tickets which I thought was completely Bitchin'

I also got to see Ed Coffee's show go from him and Amy to the re-introduction of Jammer on the morning show. I also really dug going on the air after the House of Hair and being able to go home with the CD because Chris James would only toss it in the trash when he was done. I also really liked working for 105.7 The X, because I began there as an intern and got to shadow The Handyman.
Aahhh Good Times....Gooood Times!

Michael...? You and I chatted every now and then, probably whenever
I was covering Steve's shift. You once to me that I'd like Classic Rock
when I got older. (laughter)

Last I heard, you worked for WRVV.

Sunday nights at 10pm. BTW, did you attend the last Best of the Bands
show in '95? I was trying to remember the name of a band that played
the show. Some details...

Cole (good Alternative Rock band) opened the show. Next, The Martini
Brothers (excellent Rockabilly trio), the third band was a Metal group,
and the headliner was Brother Cane (Kix had called it quits, IIRC.)

The singer for that Metal band (dude with long, blonde hair) reved up
the crowd so much that people soon started pouring over the railing and
up to the stage. The station van was parked on the track; Dave Powers
shouts "Get the van outta Here!"

Originally, there were 70+ of us near the stage, then suddenly, maybe
two-hundred folks. Pretty wild...

> Or the time I spent at WTPA. That was a thrill ride.

After the Eagle, I sent a T&R to Chris when Dina worked up there. But all I
got was a nice letter from Chris and one of his business cards.
