Max Werner - Rain In May (Radio Records, 1981)
I thought this was Peter Gabriel when I first heard it.

Did anyone ever cover that song?

Parts of it sound very familiar, both lyrics and music, but I think I'd remember the negative reaction I would have had to the lead vocal.

The Beach Boys could have done something really good with this, I think.

Or think what Phil Collins could have done with it. My only objection with Werner's vocal is with the vocodered bits.

Another one came to mind today, something I haven't heard in many years. Lots of you probably know this song, maybe the Waylon Jennings version - but the only version I remember hearing on the radio was by Billy Joe Royal:

"(Don't let the sun set on you in) Tulsa" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10_RCqwPCL0

I know I'm not crazy, I remember hearing this version (100% sure on that) by BJ Royal on the radio in Tampa back then. According to Wikipedia, it barely cracked the top 100 in 1971, at #86. Since I only listened to AM Top 40 stations at the time (WLCY/Tampa or WKXY/Sarasota), I wonder why they played this often enough for me to remember so clearly? AFAIK, Top 40 stations wouldn't play anything that hasn't reached that chart position, or close to it...or I could be wrong. Some of you were DJ's and would know better than me. I listened to the Wayne Carson version that's on YouTube, and it doesn't come close (IMHO) to this version.

Does anyone else remember hearing this version, or only the Waylon or Carson version? Anyway, great song, well sung.

Best male vocalist non-hit: "Boats Against the Current" by Eric Carmen. Also covered by Olivia Newton-John on her "Totally Hot" LP. #88 BB in 1978.

Best female vocalist non-hit: "All the Love in the World" by Dionne Warwick. #101 in 1983.

Best non-hit by a group: "Something Old, Something New" by the Fantastics. #102 in 1971.
