Your Favorite Radio Stations (In Tampa)

My pick would be Q105. Even though I'm young (College Student) I love the music. I love the fact that the Q embraces all the genres of Oldies music. Not just the Rock! Its nice to hear The Commodores, The Bryds and Hall and Oates on the same station. I also like that the Q has been using its Jingles from the CHR days. I like the old jingles, A lot of radio stations wouldn't do that. The only thing I would like more is if 50's music was added in the mix. Like what sister station WCBS 101.1 does. I also believe that Q105 has the most interesting personalities in Tampa Radio. JoJo, Scott Walker, Mason Dixon and a few others. Great Station Overall!

Next would be Mix 100.7. While the station doesn't sound as great as when I was Elementary School its still a good station. Well good considering that 6 Radio Stations in Tampa are owned by Cox. I must admit though I do like the music selection. Even if I'm not the hugest fan of newer CHR music. At least Mix tries to have personality however!

Honorable Mentions-

WDUV- Lets cut to the chase. The selection of music is great! The station just needs personalities and new liners.

WFLZ 93-3, Why I do not like the kind of music out today I must praise the Power Pig. The variety of music is far superior of Hot 101-5. I mean Hot takes a song and plays it once every 2 hours. The personality my also be canned but its better than nothing.

Lets be honest though! Maybe I'm just obtuse. The ADHD and the High Functioning Autism may have an effect on why I fascinate about radio. Particular radio with Good Music and Personalities. Why I like music made as much as 40-years before I was born. Who Knows!

Does? CBS-FM hasn't had 50's music in their regular rotation since the pre-"Jack-FM" days.

I agree with all of that written above. I also like WUSF overnight jazz and classic country, doo wop, folk, and bluegrass on WMNF and also WPCV

MSMusicRadio, does 97.5 WPCV still do Country Gold Saturday Nights and other country gold programs. If you give me a time I could try to pick it up on the radio or listen online. I know I used to listen back in Grade School. (When I lived in Polk County.)

I know on Sunday Nights 106.3 WJQB did a Doo-Wop Shop with Bobby Oshay. However last I checked the program was replaced with Scott Shannons "Crusin' USA". The program was on at 8 every Sunday Night. Locally-Produced as well. Love listening to the Doo-Wop music of the 50's and early 60's. A professor of mine would record every show on a cassette tape. Then bring the tape to class the next day and dedicate a song to a student. Usually one student per class. My song was 'I will Wait" by The Four Buddies. If he didn't use tapes of the Doo-Wop shop he would play songs off his CD collection.

Does 88.5 WMNF just play Bluegrass and Folk by random and do they have specific programs with that music. I usually listen to that music online but it does help to expand my options.

I thought CBS Fm did play a few songs from the 50's. Not in regular rotation, but a few, I know when CBS pulled off the Jack FM Stunt they played a few oddball pre-1964 songs. I do know that they did cut a lot of pre-1964 material however.

No...I'm the Obtuse1. 8)

I'm partial to 97X myself, with a side of Mix, Q105, WMNF, Magic and Hot (as well a WTZB Sarasota and Max 98.3 Lakeland on the fringes).

I have to place a vote for WSDV/WDDV The Dove 1450 & 1320. They are one of the few adult standards stations left that actually get it right. Musically they pick up where WGUL left off 7 years ago: Original pop hits from the post-swing era through the '60s and a few compatible '70s songs too. Most standards stations these days are poorly programmed, filing the format with boring contemporary remakes. WSDV/WDDV keeps it hit-based and very interesting. Does anyone know who is programming over there?

I also like WSDV/WDDV the Dove. But living in N Pinellas I only get to hear it when I go south of Ulmerton Road on business now and then. Love the music, not too fond of their whole "Route 66" branding and repetitive liners.

Route 66 is one of Clear Channels "Format Lab" formats. Doubt anyone local has anything to do with the music choice.

While having a really small playing field, I really like micro powered WWTF, "Radio Whitfield" @ 96.1" in southern Manatee County... Best from 5 decades and on Sunday am, they have "The Forgotten 50's" show... and of course, commercial free doesn't hurt, although the do run some PSA's, news and weather...

After that, I'd have to go with Q-105,WRBQ @ 104.7...

Then WDDV/WDSV AM 1320/1450... although I wish they were live and local rather from a dish...

AM Tampa on 970 WFLA has gotten real stale over the years.. It DOES perk up when Mark Larsen fills in though...Otherwise it's the same old stuff we've heard for decades...

Pretty much after that, I'm gone to XM ...

enjoy the day...

Re: Your Favorite Radio Stations (In Tampa) no such thing

104.1 orlando late pm
580 orlando early evenings
wsb atlanta mornings
88.5 bluegrass sat morn
'tune in' radio app all other times

since no ones signal can make it east of us301 this town's radio sucks and keeps getting worse

We do not live in the bay area, but if it is like Miami and other cities we've visited, would have to say most HD-2's which do not simulcast AM news/talk/sports stations or feed Reach FM translators.

In many markets, CBS has the only personality-driven FM stations. This is particularly true of the Classic Hits format. CBS does better with this format, I think, than any other one. Besides Q-105, K-Earth in Los Angeles comes to mind.

Not a Tampa station but I'm really taking a liking to WMFQ 92.9 in Ocala. The stations has DJ's even in the middle of the night and the music selection is just phenomenal. I mean this Hot AC station takes the format seriously. I've heard songs on there I haven't heard on Mix 100.7 and Magic 94.9 in a while. The station plays a perfect blend of music from the 90's to today. No song old or new gets pounded to death. Now I liked the "Big Oldies" format the station had before. However 92 Q-FM is not bad either. I like the fact that I don't hear a lot of Rap and Dance. I hear a lot of Soft Rock fare with a bit of Pop mixed in. Might be a station MsMusicRadio will be interested in. Or other radio geeks on this site.

Now playing "Crash into me" by Dave Mathews Band.

FM (left to right):
WMNF... eclectic & weird, but WAY too much talk
WUSF... intelligent people on mic- a rarity!
WYUU... bouncy-bouncy music (and not understanding the jocks is a plus)
WWRM... nice tunes for my demo, semi-soothing
WPOI... bouncy-bouncy music, good for driving or exercising
WRBQ... rock/pop for my demo, and the most like radio used to/should be
WXGL... nice tunes overall, but still a bit pukey

AM:
WTAN... unrestrained hilarity of hearing the world's worst radio station
all others odious
