(Dis)Honorable Mention: Nickelback - Photograph ... seriously, wouldn't Alternative Radio be better off without these lame corporate rockers and 3 Doors Down?

Ya, it would sound better w/o some of these lame bands.

However the "Photograph" tune has such huge appeal it would be hard not to play it or at least be on it early & first if you were running a commercial alternative station. Kind of like the liner that used to run on the old 93.7 The Edge in Minneapolis, "First you hear it on the edge. Then you hear it evverrrrrywhere else."<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by saladdressing on 11/12/05 12:25 AM.</FONT></P>

Word has it that when Thrice was here in Cleveland recently the crowd just stood there kind of perplexed when they were playing material from the new album. Apparently nobody really cared for it.

I agree with that. However, my local Alternative outlet (WHTG/WBBO in the Monmouth/Ocean NJ market) has had it in power rotation ever since it came out. While many Alternative stations will spin tracks like this less often when they cross over, WHTG/WBBO doesn't follow this trend - they play songs like this just as frequently, and possibly even more. They have given Papa Roach's "Scars" at least 20 spins a week going on a whole year now. When I hear the first note of that song, I tune out instantly.</P>

The whole album is very different. Most of the new songs have a much slower pace than what Thrice fans are accustomed to, and they also use organs (particularly Rhodes and Hammond) on most of the tracks. They definitely don't sound like a band that would fit in on a Warped Tour lineup any more. But that's not to say that they have gone soft either - there's plenty of screaming and louder sections on much of the songs as well. "Image Of The Invisible" was the obvious choice for a single because it's probably closer to the Thrice sound of old than any other track on the album.</P>

I agree that alternative radio....while they should play hits, doesn't need to be all over a band like Nickelback or Three Doors Down or Shinedown. Maybe play the Nickelback when it first comes out, as more of a novelty item...but having it in power rotation for months afterwards is totally unnecessary. I'm not trying to sound like an alterna-snob, but there are just certain bands that alt. radio should stay away from. You want mass appeal.....keep playin' the hell out of The Killers and Greenday.<P ID="signature">______________

I couldn't agree more about Nickelback...I'm so so tired of that sound. All their songs sound exactly the same and have absoulely no variety or substance.

If Nickelback wasnt heard of again ever, noone would notice (and many would rejoice)
But 3 Doors Down? C'Mon. They are a great bunch of guys. The haters dont like them because they are popular, from the deep south and want every song to sound like Kryptonite. Personally they have a rather unique type of sound that is somewhat reminiscent of Lynard Skynard. I like it.

If you want to go after bands stick to Nickelback, Breaking Benjamin or *cringes* Good Charlotte.

In terms of current songs:

Avenged Sevenfold - Bat Country
Fall Out Boy - Dance Dance
Staind - Falling
Seether - Truth
A distant 5th would be System of a Down - Hypnotize, though I am down on them lately

It speaks volumes for artistic integrity when a band can separate itself from a pre-defined formula and try for new sonic experiences, esp. when signed to a major label.

I definitely agree with that - very few bands are able to break away from a certain classification or label expectations enough to try something different.</P>

Another good example of this is Finch. They could have copied their aggressive (but still mostly radio-friendly) "screamo" sound from their first album, or they could have made like The Used and write tons of soft radio-friendly ballads for their teenage female fans, but instead they put out Say Hello To Sunshine, an album that is influenced by Deftones, Faith No More and Dillinger Escape Plan, but comes out sounding nothing like any of them. It's hard to classify and isn't going to move tons of units, but it's definitely one of the most interesting and ambitious (for major-label standards, at least) releases to come out this year. What's even more amazing is that this came out on Geffen Records, home to such bland corporate schlock acts as Ashlee Simpson and Black Eyed Peas.</P>

And that's exactly why they don't belong on Alternative Radio. Their sound, along with the quantity of sappy balladry that they put out ("Be Like That", "Here Without You" and "Here By Me" are as drippy as anything by Air Supply), falls squarely within the pantheon of corporate rock. It has its place - it's just way too safe and predictable to warrant its Alternative classification.</P>

Y'know, WLIR was a southern rock station that sort of morphed into a new wave station....

I guess you would claim Godsmack's acoustic album is too safe too. Every band has a softer side. I remember the outcry of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. Every band has a softer side. They certainly are not entirely CHR. Is Live for Today, Right where I belong, Down Poison or Smack CHR? Definately not. The alternative landscape has changed quite a bit in last decade.
Again, I'd rather complain about hearing Good Charlotte's Anthem on Alternative Radio.

Not at all. I judge bands by looking at the whole picture - music & lyrics. And from a lyrical perspective, the 3 Doors Down songs I mentioned do have a very drippy, sentimental vibe to them - by contrast, I have heard Godsmack's acoustic album and I don't see why anyone who likes that band wouldn't enjoy that album, unless they dislike acoustic music. "Running Blind" and "Touche" will NEVER get played on Adult Contemporary radio, unlike 3 Doors Down - both acts may have some mellow material in their catalogs, but in analyzing both they're about as different as night and day.</P>
