Your First Central PA Gig

My First Central PA Gig was at WMLP, 1380 in Milton back in 1965 (how many years ago was that?
just yesterday..anyway, I was sophomore in Shikellamy HS (Sunbury) Class of 1967. Learned
"the ropes" from PD Jim Jacobs ("JJ") and from owner Victor Michael (who also had a brother Robert
Michael who did sales). Had to bail out in 1968 to join the USAF, went to NW Florida Panhandle worked
radio there, overseas with AFRTS and assignments to Honolulu, Hawaii and Shreveport, Louisiana
and back to NW FL (Ft Walton Beach) where it ended in 2003 when Cumulus came to town. After a
20 years in the USAF retired then 16 yrs later went back to civil service where I am now in Florida!

"Stonecold" Steve Williams :)

First and only Central Pa Gig was '86-'91 at WTPA. Was hired by Torre as a part timer and later promoted to full time by Simon Jeffries who later left for New York. I then had the honor of working with Jeff Kauffman! Worked with Mike Tyler, Kim Rodkey, Kevin Beam, Joanna London, Pat Donovan, Chris James, and of course Ed Coffey! And...I believe Michael Anthony Smith was a part timer at WTPA when I left. What a trip that was...stories (on and off the air) could go on forever!

Mine was for Mod Rod Wolf and Lou Murray at WRTA in Altoona in November of 1969. Joe Har-Hi was our news director, Bill Rock and Peter McCoy were at WFBG and Commander (Tim) Burns was doing all nights at WVAM. Tom Foolery was also at WVAM along with PD Bill Robbins. Tom Casey was doing mornings at WRTA and Wes Maley was grumpy doing mornings and some TV at WFBG.

my first gig was for lou murray at wmbt in 1969.

Hey Mark! I was just talking about you in my broadcasting class the other day!!! I was talking about our 'TPA ghost. What are you up to these days? Do you ever see anyone from the old crew? I teach high school now. Taught radio in New Jersey until 2006 and now I am in Lancaster.

My first gig was at WUNS, Leswisburg, Pa., a 250 watt AM radio station at 1010 on the dial with no pre-sunrise and sign off at local sunset. The call letters, not counting the W, which no one does of course, stood for Union, Northumberland and Snyder counties. The studio, office, transmitter site, all in one building that looked like a small house, was situated along Routes 11 & 15 just over the hill, south of Bucknell University.

I started at WUNS in early June of 1966 as a news person and Sunday afternoon DJ. for a wopping $40.00 a week. My everyday duty was to gather the local news by calling the police stations of Lewisburg, Milton, Sunbury, Selinsgrove, and Danville. Then I would write and record the stories for our newscasts. I would also go to the scene of a major news event and record voice tracks on a cassette deck to be played later in our newscasts. I also edited the postcards and letters we received for our “Swap Shop” and “Community Bulletin Board” programs.

My Sunday DJ shift started at Noon and went until sign off. In the winter months, that would be 4:45 p.m. In August, the month with the longest broadcast time, I could go until 8:45.

my first gig in central pa radio was the lunch hour shift at WHAC (HACC Radio). My first REAL gig was in news at WNOW-AM 1250 in York, June 1978. I was one half of the morning team of Mike and Mary in the morning. good times! got to cover the accident at TMI in March of 1979. Also did news on Q-106 when Jim Cook was the morning jock, followed by Liz (?), Bob Michaels, Joe Columbo, Johnny Ringo, St. John, Mike Leech, Brad Flick, and others that this old brain just can't remember. I saw on this site that there was a Q-106 reunion. Sorry I didn't know about it...would have loved to been there to hear the stories.

High School report gig @ WFBG Altoona in about '63
Weekends at WVAM Altoona 63-64
WTRN Tyrone
WILK Wilkes Barre '64
AFVN Saigon chief announcer 66-67 (Goood morning, Vietnam)
Back To WFBG '68 as "Foxy"
Then on to various NY stations

My first job in radio was at WCNR in Bloomsburg, pa. back then they were a 1k daytimer at am 930. studios were downtown above a coffee shop. the frequency is now dark and the calls are being used the am frequency that used to be WHLK...(590 I think). I also thinks the studios are now located out of town along rt 11. after that gig I ended up at WWPA in Williamsport for a few years. those were the days..

My first introduction to radio was in 1978 when the NOW 93.5 WTPA went on the air as QV-93. I hung out in the evenings after school -- I was 15 at the time -- learing the biz. Everything from pulling the next hours music which was on cart at the time to taking out the trash. The station would not hire me (1) because of my age (2) no on-ir experiance. I contacted WIOO in Carlisle where I pleaded my case to break into radio. I was hired when I turned 16 to work weekends. Saturdays were on air until the staion went dark (am daytimer) Sundays were running "live" church programmimg from 6-11.

I worked there for about a year and returned to QV-93 where I got hired to work weekends. The shift was Saturday night / Sunday morning 2a-8a board-oping PSA shows. 6 fun filled hours of changing tapes! I didn't care though...I was 16, a sophmore in high school and working at the local radio station!! I did my time and eventually was given a weekend air shift (overnights of course) I worked there for a couple of years. I stayed active in radio until 2002 when I went part time and eventually got out of the business in 2009.

'81-'82 Q106 part-timer. Back in the days of Dan Steele, Kevin Troy, Slim Jim Buchanan and Casey Summers. Later worked full-time at WTPA under Jammin' Jeff Kauffman in '87-'88.

jlync1 -- We have some fellow jocks in common. I think Kevin Troy did part time at WQVE in the early 80's. I was at TPA" from 99 till present (havent worked a shift in eons but am still on the payroll...lol). I did overnights there when "The Jammer" was doinf mornings with Ed Coffee. I used to give Jeff his "wake-up" call every morning.

And Dave, what did you do immediately after waking Jeff up?

That's right..

You made a pot of coffee...

'Had that gig too. The coffee was more important than the wake up call to him!)
