your first job

1954. I'm 14. Talked the GM of KGBC in Galveston to let me do an afternoon and Saturday program directed to teens. He paid me 6 bucks a week. I sold the Saturday program to Poll Parrot Shoes in Houston. Split that 50-50 with the station. Net income per week was $31.

4 years later. I'm 18. I'm a student at Tulane. Got evening job doing "Music 'til Dawn." Made a grand a month for 3 hours/night work (the next 3 hours was a taped version of the previous 3 hours)

Contemporaneous New Orleans job. Hung my 1st phone at WYOK (had no idea how to repair anything..they had several guys who had been radio operators in the service who kept it on the air). Went by once a week and signed the logs. They paid me $500 a month. I'm making $1,500 a month. What'd I need college for. My dad was bigger and stronger than I. I stayed in college and finished.

Now I read that you guys are saying that some of the stations around here are paying between 6 and 10 an hour. If that's true, that's totally outrageous.

First paid gig was in 1976, at KGKL- 960, San Angelo. I worked the Sunday afternoon 3 pm to Midnight slot. Three hours of music, followed by 6 hours of religious programming. I think I got $2.75/hr, but honestly can't remember.

First fulltime gig was in 1977, at KDDD/KMRE, Dumas. Worked afternoon til 10 pm (when the FM signed off). $670/month.

I got my third phone the week that I turned 18. I took the bus from San Angelo to Dallas, and stayed at the Adolphus Hotel (I want to say it cost $14/night). Chill Wills http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0932629/ was staying there, and bought me a drink at the bar. I thought that was pretty cool. Took my test the next morning, passed, and started work the next weeked at KGKL.
