Your guess...when is JACK coming to Dade/Broward and what station?

Ok,let the guessing begin...when and what station will be flipping to JACK-FM? I'm guessing Sunny for several reasons...their morning show is a train wreck with ratings in the toilet, their studio's are in poor shape, and their highly rated PM drive personality is working without a contract for almost a year. As for when, I would say after the next ratings book, but hey, I could be wrong.

Matt-
My guess is......it's not gonna happen. South Florida is too weird a radio market. Whats popular here, bombs elswhere and vice-versa. I just don't think JACK would go over here. If the higher-ups at Sunny 104.3 do anything, they should either sell the station or use some national syndicated show for morning drive, keep their 7-Midnight syndicated show with Delilah, Voice track Midnight-6AM & fill the rest with a competent but not high paid air staff. As for their PM Drive guy, i'm not suprised. Unless you're a "Big Name" (ie: Neil Rogers, Footy, Rick Shaw, etc.), most stations don't like to offer contracts.

The JACK thing is over.

A lot of the original steam is done. I don't see any large markets gettig the formate. The burnout rate is extremely high.

While I do not think it will be Sunny - it bills too well and the format is too safe - Jack formats are still hot. One reason is that they are extremely cheap to run. No jocks, few promos, etc. make Jack stations very attractive from an overhead perspective...

The more successful Jack stations or clones do not save on staff and marketing. An example would be KCBS FM in LA, which costs more to run as Jack than it did as a 70´s rock station. First, they treat it like an AC promotionally, reinforcing awareness and usage by constant advertising. Then, on air they have producers / production people in studio at all times to take and edit all the listener bites that get on the air... a good prodoction person in LA is comparable in pay to a jock... if not more. Overall, the savings are minimal if any and represent a very tiny amount of the overall budget of a station.

David, Great post! Thanks for the info, it tells alot of what goes on behind the scenes. I'm wondering if it's the same at WCBS-FM? <P ID="signature">______________

Re: The Real Deal on Jack

Gary Wall (one of the men behind the Jack format) and I are not only friends, but in fact we spoke just this morning concerning a project I'm working on for Jack on a nationwide basis. I can tell you there are no plans to bring Jack to Miami/Fort Lauderdale, and probably won't be for a long time.

Gary would love to bring Jack to this market, but has not been able to generate any interest. One of the biggest objections to Jack is not the format itself, or how it's marketed or promoted, but rather, when a station flips to Jack, you have to turn over a huge amount of the programming decisions to Gary and his people. A number of companies and executives are not comfortable with that.

As for Jack stations having production people on duty around the clock to edit phone calls, that may be true for one or two stations, but it's not universal. I know that because I need to wrap up this message and go back to editing some more Jack phone calls.
