Your mentor

A while ago the question up for discussion was , "who was your radio mentor?" I was flattered to note that someone actually mentioned ME as their mentor. It's been driving me crazy ever since wondering who said that.
Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

TD

Let me tell you about Tom Daren! TD, "The Kid" was one of the MOST PROFESSIONAL broadcasters to grace the lands of Western Pennsylania! I can still hear him in my head as I mentally review his time at WJAC in Johnstown. TD brought professional radio to the Johnstown market. I always felt WJAC had two DYNAMITE and I mean absolutly fantastic voices....TD and Jim Daly. (TD, whatever happened to Jim? I remember he went over to 'JNL for a while. He was actually hired away from 'JAC for the astronomical compensation of $200 per week! And further TD, where is Dick L. these days? Oh yes, did you hear what XM+CC did to Bruce?) There is NO DOUBT, TD served as a mentor too many throughout the country! No only was he a PD-supervisor but a PD-educator as well.

It is so good to see you around these precincts, TD. "Here's hoping you've enjoyed the 'words' we've put down"! Now, if only I could hear "Leapfrog" playing in the background!

And TD...is it OK if next winter with a foot of snow on the ground I look at the clock at "Think Spring Time"?

At Christmas time, can I think about another "Terrible Tie Contest"?

Is there any hope I can win "Cash Call"?

And before I forget, right before I go to bed, do you mind if I play "Goodnight" from the White album?

Or, is it OK to test the transmitter with "Here Comes The Sun"

Be well! And for those of you dropping by this part of the world, let me again affirm TD is one of the GREATEST broadcasters this side of the universe! WDW will forever be remembered for the "two Toms".

Be good....

John Rook built a great sound and he was correct to eject me ::)

I left Da Burg in 1968 to move to Big WAYS country . KQV a was great station from it's inception as Top 40 till I left. Then it was all downhill. ;D . Other than that, I live in the time warp where their are 7 airshifts a day and overnights are always live with tomorrow's PM drive guy and the exit door is left unlocked. In my time warp, WABC still slugs it out with WMCA and WLS with WCFL. WQAM with WFUN and KQV with KDKA. In my time warp, nobody wonders who wrote the book of love and it will always be whispering bells. I could go on___ :p

One more thing. Going in to the time machine, the Spring of 1965 was really exciting because I could hear WCFL putting together it's new sound ( even as I lived in Da Burg) and I could read in Billboard about how KHJ was gearing up to take on KFWB and KRLA. Floats my boat.

- and Chuck Brinkman - 7p - Mid on KQV. KQV, with John Rook as PD, is regarded as one of the best Top-40's of the era. "Groovy 'QV" It was close to being a WLS farm team!

I remember KQV as a hodge podge of programming BEFORE it flipped to Top 40. I think that it flipped before WABC and WLS. Not sure about WXYZ. I thought ABC was trying out the concept first on KQV. ABC used a distinctive intro to the news "Live at 55" and it was used on most affiliates no matter the format. When I was still to little to go downtown, I would DX on a huge old consol radio and I could hear this on a lot of stations like KXEL in Waterloo Iowa. I hoped that they all would be Top 40, but alas no. In 1959, I never heard of Todd Storz, so I assumed ABC invented the format. Of course WEEP was also Top 40, so that presumption made no sense.

Ravin Dave followed by Chuck was a combo that had all the kids rockin". Anybody remember Larry Aiken who had the shift before Chuck? I know Jim Quinn took the slot after Chuck left and Quinn had a thing about ABC wanting him to cut his hair and conducted a poll on that. I presumed it was a promo, but it may have been when ABC got rid of the corporate blazers and hair rules? Useless trivia

I started at KQV in Feb. 1958, shortly after ABC took over. They wanted to change the call letters to WASP but they were being used by a maritime station and were not available. Prior to the top 40 switch, KQV was beaten out in the ratings in Pgh. by WBVP-AM.

Oh, by the way. They were going to move the xmtr. to Davis Island in the Ohio River using a 4 tower box array. However, they ran several radials using a 50 watt xmtr. and the results showed that there would be little improvement over their existing antenna system. Besides, the site would have to be manned and a boat would be needed to get there.
