Your picks?

I will be in San Antonio & Austin most of next week. What country stations would you recommend? (Please include freqs). Are there any that are complete train wrecks (ones to avoid)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Your choices in Austin are KVET 98.1 and KASE 100.7.
The choices haven't changed in nearly 30 years. The only difference is KVET is now on FM.

In San Antonio...if you like real Country music...then KKYX 680 is the station. If you like the crap that passes for Country music today...well, I wouldn't know.

KKYX is great for country music released before the '90s. For the newer country hits, I recommend KAJA at 97.3. I've tried KCYY (Y 100) at 100.3, but found KJ superior in most every aspect.

I spent most of last month in Austin, and I got to San Antonio a few times. I hate to say it, purpledevil, but I agree with you that KJ-97 sounded much better than Y-100. If someone had said that 20 years ago, I would have thought they were crazy, but I guess the times have changed.

Depending on where you are in Austin and San Antonio, you'll probably have several other country choices. At the apartment where I was near Braker and Metric, I was able to get 105.5 out of Killeen/Temple on the home stereo and car radio. It didn't have a bad music mix, but I don't know why you'd listen to it when you have KASE and KVET as options, both of which were very good. KVET and KASE were very much in tune with Austin and had a lot of local content. I'm only a lukewarm country fan, but I listened to both quite-a-bit. I found myself listening to KGSR 107.1 a lot, too. It's not a country station per se, but it plays a lot of local music, much of which has a country sound.

In San Antonio, there's an Americana/Texas Country station out of New Braunfels, 92.1 KNBT, which is quite good. It sounds best on the north side of town. Also, if you're in northwest San Antonio, KRNH 92.3 is probably an option at least in the car, though you'll lose it if you head too far toward downtown. I believe it's mostly satellite delivered outside of morning drive. So, don't expect much local content outside of some of the commercials!
