Looking back at late 80s to early 90s... which did you prefer and why? I was listening to some old jingles and got to thinking...

WKZQ, Wave 104 or Power 98

Q107 or 95SX

WCKN during the Hot Hits period, WANS, WFBC, or 99.9 Kiss FM

WJMX on 106

WZNS Z93

Yes97 or WNOK
 
Clearly, Q107 and Yes97. But just as clearly, as much as I loved both of those stations, my tastes and preferences put me on the wrong side of radio history.

For me it was Power 98... Was kinda like a night club over the air with all the mixes...

Q107 or 95SX
Q107 by far because I could listen to it pretty much all the time, but WROQ pretty much killed 95SX

WCKN during the Hot Hits period, WANS, WFBC, or 99.9 Kiss FM
By far 99.9 Kiss FM from 84 to 86 and WANS from 87 to Feb 1st 1991

WJMX on 106
106X was a pretty good station and from my memory it reminded me a lot of 99.9 Kiss FM since they played everything from classic rock to top 40

Yes97 or WNOK
Wnok from about 1984 to early 86 and Yess 97 from Feb 88 to about August of 90 before they went in their alternative/rock 40/top forty to elvis time frame... CC1

Listening to a bunch of airchecks from the time period, the early to late 1980's was a great period of CHR radio, at least for us children of the 1970's. Listen to an aircheck of TK Tom Kent on WAVA, the one posted actually has him playing my request! What are the chances?
 
Dude you are right. For the true Top 40 Purist the 80's was awesome. I remember TK when he was shortly at NOK... Funny thing and maybe I am crazy, but for a time NOK was IMO a mess... It seemed like from Sept of 83 till somewhere around Feb or March of 84 NOK was what today would have been a Jack'ish type station with a mega day parting with if I remember correct 70's and even some late 60's thrown in to it being straight up top 40 in the evenings then back to a mish mash of everything overnights. For me I really loved Yes 97 in its day before it lost it's way... It was programmed pretty much like Power 98 in Myrtle Beach was, but for some reason never could take on WNOK. For me Yes sounded it's best during the summer of 89 with a lot of dance friendly tracks that made NOK even hop on the band waggon with the likes of Millie Vanilie Paula, and FYC. The one thing I remember that really made NOK sound good though was when they got a new Optimod put in... They were loud and sounded like a million dollar station only to have the processing changed and then the audio went to hell in a handbag... OK that is some of my memories... Next :)... CC
 
The last two years of WAVA weren't so good, but CHR was on a decline nationwide during that period. All the listening I did to WAVA and (lesser, WINC-FM) pretty much sealed the deal for me wanting to do radio. For those radio geeks out there, WINC-FM Winchester is sounding the best it has in years... really amazing radio for a city of 50,000+ people.

I can't remember jingles.

The only clear memory I have--and it's relatively recent--is the man I call Beelzebub saying "Rock 101.7 K Z Q".

Oh yea, I do remember "Fun all morning, music all day, 105-WAVA!" And they had a great morning show with Don and Mike, and news reader David Hains, who was like Paul Harvey on steroids. Great hit music playlist, great station in the late 80s, early 90s. Then suddenly, for some surprise reason, they completely flipped and became a religious station. And then somewhere around that time, Q-107 became Mix 107.3. Was not happy with those flips back then, which was also around the time they flipped all the Roy Rogers into Hardees. Which was definitely a bad move. So taking away my favorite radio and favorite fast food was not too good.
 
Also back in the 80s, the original WROQ when it was 95Q in Charlotte was a great rock station. With Murphy in the Morning show. And the old 107.9 when it was WBCY rock station, and the original home of the John Boy and Billy show. These days I flip between Bob and Sheri and Ace and TJ in the mornings.
