Who are the people who influenced you to get into radio, and the ones that influenced you the most once you did?

BEFORE -
Bill "Birdman" Thomas, WHHY,WBRC...the way radio was intended to be
Spyder Harrison, 15-LAC late at night...he had the pipes
Lanny West, Y102...awesome talent, awesome person

AFTER -
Randall Hughey, WQSI...for giving a snot nose 15 year old a chance :)
Gil Anthony, WORJ...the man who taught me to never burn a bridge
Randy "JR" Culpepper, WLSQ...no better friend
Jeff "Dirk" Donovan & Windle "Skipper" Jay...let's see Y102, BAM99, 95 ROCK, WACQ, The FOX, etc. ...This is where I learned the line, "hold my beer and watch this!"

Who are yours?

before: Stewy - for he created the knobs and the dial, the a and the f, remote talent fees and the self winding cart.

after: Stewy - because he continues to inspire creative snide remarks.

Thanks hsa! Very sorry to have side tracked your thread Mr. ONeal. Seriously, I must agree that Spyder Harrison was huge for me. Remember that really cool intro he had with the electronic effect for his name! After getting into the biz, most influential in my life and continues to be so was the late and truely great Mr. Tim Godwin. Sure do miss him..........................

No prob Stewy.

Yep...Tim was a great guy. He and I worked together at J103 from SEP 82' to JUL 83". Too many stories to tell. I was quite proud of him when he joined KMX. He talked frequently about reaching that goal.

Before: Dick Biondi - WLS
Rick Dees - WSGN
Joe Rumore - WVOK
Dan Brennan - WVOK

After: All I came in contact with

Before:

Eli Gold - the man that made every Alabama kid want to get into radio
The Goofy White Boys - WABB
------ & Ken - 107.7 the X
Hot Ron Anthony - WABB

After:

Brian Hart - 92 Zew
Hurricane Shane - 107.7 the X (although I knew him during the Point days)
Tim Rose - Oldies 106

The legendary Bill J Moody, Big Bam circa 1960-65. The Big Bam ruled from Talledega to PC and beyond.

I grew up with Rick Deese, but....

today i would say the likes of Dave Gilligan, John Houston, BJ Kelly, Jes Bailey..

i am a youngster as you can tell.

Speaking of the "Goofy White Boys", I saw one of them, Bill Evans, a couple of weekends ago on Good Morning America. Bill & I attended Miss State at the same time although we worked at competing stations.

For those that might not know, Bill has been doing the morning weather on WABC-TV in New York for over 17 years.

But following the topic:

- Before, John "Records" Landecker at night on WLS

- After, Rick Dees

And speaking of Rick Dees, I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Dees again (we worked together in Memphis in 1978) in April at the NAB.

I also knew Jimmy Jones and Pat Kilgore, worked with both of them at 42. Two great guys and I really enjoyed working with them. Pat was such a character. Used to hit the hamfests around the area with him...Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Panama City (or maybe it was Ft. Walton) and probably a few others. I remember Jimmy was also doing engineering work for several radio stations in the area, I went with him to 1220-AM once (it was WAYE then...I don't know what it is now) and saw their studio as well as their transmitter. It wasn't much...what a hole! LOL! I was amazed that the station actually had a pretty decent sound at the time. I guess that was thanks to Jimmy's skills. I miss them both and think of them often.

Bartel Bartel was the best jock I've heard in this market...used to track the last hour of my show to catch his last hour...dude was tight

Gotta go with rickey here...Bill J. Moody ~ good God y'all! In the day, he was the boss of the boss jocks!

Here's a stellar rundown...

Then:
John "Records" Landecker (the fake name I've chosen in phonebooks for years to avoid paying for an unlisted number!)
Larry Lujack
Tom Owens (actually worked under him long ago)
John Sebastian (when he used to score, and worked with him as well!)

Now:
Depends on who wins tomorrow!

Then: Wolfman Jack, Rick Stacey, John Young, John "Records" Landecker

Now and forever: John "Records" Landecker, who only took the job cause they sang his name! I only got into radio cause of him. That god for the WLS Rewind. 30 years between "Boogie Checks" was all I could handle.

Cripes, pro...you HAVE been round awhile! You're right...in the days of boss jocks, there was none higher. Records rules!

I don't know if anyone in your area carries it, but the syndicated "Into the 70's" show (which until recently was being hosted by Tom Kent) is now being jocked by John Landecker (as of last Sunday night).

YES, yes I have been around. Hell I remember when Alan Freed ask me what I thought about those race records. I said play 'em this is radio,
nobody in radio ever gets fired. My how times have changed. But I can still program circles around all you young whipper snappers. ;D
