Your station preferences (Polls, kinda)

I'm so glad to see more activity in here lately. I was thinking of putting up some polls but if the capability is here, I'm not finding it. I thought it might be interesting to see, amongst us geeks, which stations you find yourself listening to when compared to their competition. Some aren't apples to apples of course but pretty close. I thought it might spark some interesting conversation. I wanted to have a thread for each match-up but without polls, that seems cumbersome so here it goes...

If you are a fan of/listener to these formats, which of these do you find yourself gravitating to and why?
  1. B101.1 vs. 106.1 The Breeze
  2. WIP-FM vs. The Fanatic
  3. WDAS-FM vs. Classix 107.9
  4. Q102 vs. WTDY
  5. WOGL vs. BEN-FM
  6. Power 99 vs. WRNB
  7. WRFF vs. WXPN
  8. WHYY vs. WPHT

I really only gravitate to a couple of formats on the air in Philly. I mostly listen to podcasts and Amazon Music stations (Platinum Pop, Chill Electronic, and Lo-Fi Hip Hop Chill). When I make decisions regarding our terrestrial offerings, it's usually when I'm in a car.
  • 1. 106.1 The Breeze: There was of course a ton of repetition when the station launched but now it's a wide open book. I don't dislike B101.1's library, it's just limiting and not unlike what I can hear on so many other stations/streams.
  • 5. BEN-FM: Here, it's also mostly about the variety and I do like hearing an "Oh wow" every so often. Oddly, I also get more of a "fun" feeling from them. That's not really in reference to jocks, so I guess I've fallen hook-line-and-sinker for the (now-ancient) branding!

  1. B101.1 vs. 106.1 The Breeze

106.1 all the way! I like both but that is my preference. Its softer which is why I prefer it, and its music library matches what I view as softer rock. While I don't mind B101, they are to me very hot. Not unlike a lot of mainstream AC's out there.

  1. WDAS-FM vs. Classix 107.9
When I do listen to this format its WDAS all the way. TO me t they seem to be slower leaning R&B and more relaxing.

  1. Q102 vs. WTDY
WTDY (as I like the older throbacks), but the processing on the analog lately is seriously making me wanna go to WIOQ more.

  1. WOGL vs. BEN-FM
Ben-Fm, but only in mornings because that is when there's an actual DJ on. I'm not a fan at all of WOGL's imaging and jingles. That being said I do like Glen in mornings there too.

  1. WRFF vs. WXPN
WRFF. While I like WXPN sometimes, it can be a bit too eclectic.

  1. WHYY vs. WPHT
WHYY if I want a more varied view of things, and WPHT if I want a more local feel with humor.

I prefer mornings most of all because from what I've seen for most stations in our area, this seems to have the most personality driven with listener interaction.
One thing which I like about XPN mornings is how they really get into the music and would take that over RFF although I liked Johnny in mornings when he was there.
WDAS for me mid mornings with Patty Jackson, or the quiet storm.
WIOQ mornings I like Elvis (and find Coop by himself on TDY just something is missing there.)

I don't like radio that is automated or voice tracked. If there's not a live DJ on of some kind then I'm out. (and preferably someone that isn't just reading liner cards and saying the code word to win). I want something more than that. I like both Valerie Knight in mornings and Jenn and Bill too. but I'd lean more tward 106.1 as its AC is softer than that of B101. I liked Sunny 104.5 at first too when it was around. Glen Holis Sunny Love songs.
Live and local.
It takes more time for me to turn on a radio and tune to a desired frequency (yes I use physical radios still.) also record airchecks. anyway, it takes more time to do that than to say Hey A lady, play this playlist or station on Amazon Music Unlimited HD. and by listening to the OTA signal, I get the feel of the local with the djs, the processing, and the local commercials, rather than the A lady putting in PSA's.
My point to all of that is if I'm going to go thru that to tune the radio in, I want something more than songs. or more than DJs who literally stop to announce some code word or intro a break with just a contest or something like that.
Long answer but well. there you have it! :)

  2. WIP-FM vs. The Fanatic
  3. WDAS-FM vs. Classix 107.9

  5. WOGL vs. BEN-FM
  6. Power 99 vs. WRNB
  7. WRFF vs. WXPN
  8. WHYY vs. WPHT
For demographic reference, I'm a 24 y/o Male
1. 106.1 The Breeze. I love 70s and 80s soft rock and ballads, but I listen to WISX HD-2 smooth jazz more.
2. I dislike sports and listen to neither
3. Classix 107.9. Thankfully I have an HD radio and can hear 107.9 in stereo. I love their audio processing with a super compressed and punchy bass.
4. I dislike modern pop and listen to neither
5. BEN-FM. My personal favorite Philly radio station. The best mix of 70s-90s pop and rock.
6. I dislike modern rap/hip hop and listen to neither
7. WRFF, but not by much. I listen to WXPN HD-2 more than main XPN, but not as often as 104.5
8. WHYY, not even a contest. I'm very left of center and find NPR (and BBC at night) to be the only news worth listening to.

  2. WOGL vs. BEN-FM - edge to Ben but close
  3. WHYY vs. WPHT - HYY
The rest I don’t listen to
