Your theory on why cumulus/ticket just sold 104.1?!

metroneck said:
Obviously they wouldn't had dropped their N zone simulcast if not planning on replacing with a full(er) market signal for KTCK. Richie Whitt hypothesizes a 103.3/1310 swap. My guess is KTCK wants the Cowboys back, and must have a full market night pattern to get Jerry. Cumulus owned 570 (loser) has the signal, why don't they just use that?

Not quite right, but closer than the rest of us.

Next....

Lots of unanswered questions with this LMA.

How long will the two operations remain separate? Will the Ticket eventually take over the 103.3 frequency? Will Cumulus keep the Rangers and Mavs? Will ESPN Dallas pull up stakes and send Durrett and MacMahon back to the Denton Record-Chronicle? Will Coop and Galloway eventually end up on the mothership?

This is gonna get good.

Noticed the press release did mention the ESPN primary shows, but nothing else. Also was pretty vague on where the ESPN shows would end up on the clock.

So to make it interesting here's my projections...Ticket Drive Times simulcasted on 103.3 maybe even middays. ESPN shows to 7 to 12 or maybe overnight???
Hmmm...
The plot thickens...

I'm certain Cumulus will run into some contract issues with the current KESN local personnel if it decides to clean house. I don't think Cumulus is known to buy out people, but rather just let the clock run out and not renew.

Another thing: With Bristol no longer calling the shots, Cumulus can choose to boot Mike & Mike and Cowherd whenever it wants. Unless those shows are grandfathered in by contracts, which I guess is possible, but I can't see it.

Under the terms of an LMA, the signal's owners are still technically in control. Usually, deals like this will stipulate that certain network programs must be carried somewhere. So, while it's possible Mike & Mike and Cowherd could be moved to another stick, like 1310 or 570, I doubt Cumulus will be able to just boot them. It's likely a violation of the terms of the LMA.

Curious how ESPN on 1460 will play into the overall ESPN programming strategy with the 103.3 LMA?

If the speculated-upon Cumulus/CBS merger were ever to actually happen, there sure would be a lot of moving parts to disassemble in DFW.

As I understand it, non O&O stations such as KRZI-1660 in Waco (and now 103.3) are required to carry M&M and Cowherd at their given times if they want to wear the ESPN label. So... at this time, as long as 103.3 is ESPN Radio, M&M and Cowherd will remain in their current spots. Should Cume-ho move the ESPN brand to 1310, the ESPN shows go with it.

You may be on to something, Hans.

Unless a frequency flip happens quickly, the Ticket will be FM-less starting in September. With winter coming, that means half the Metroplex will miss the last hour of the Hardline and the first two hours of the Musers. One twist that hasn't been mentioned: Maybe we see Cumulus take back control of 1700 (better night signal north) and spin off 1310 into a similar trust, move KTCK to 1700 temporarily, and eventually put ESPN there. Or the Ticket and ESPN move to 103.3 and 1700 in one fell swoop. Just spitballing.

I was certain today's "major station announcement" would be about this and we all had a scoop, but instead it was about the new Ticket app. My guess is Dickey has ordered the Ticket to be a "gloat free zone."

In a recent post on Richie Whitt's Sportatorium blog, he commented that a new 50,000 watt sports radio station was starting soon. Does anyone have an idea on what stick that could be?

This is gonna get good.

Let's bring some facts into the speculation.
1. The Ticket and ESPN will not switch frequencies, period.
2. ESPN will have to keep carrying Mike & Mike in the morning no matter what, period.
3. I don't know when the Rangers/Mavs contracts run out but they will not be moving to The Ticket, period.
4. As noted elsewhere, Galloway informed the ESPN brass about a year ago that he will retire when his contract ends 12-31-13.
5. What's in it for ESPN? 103.3 hasn't been making money. Cumulus will dump enough managment saleries, support people, lower-level on-air people and probably replace some local shows with ESPN's syndicated offerings to possibly put the station in the black; in any event, ABC/ESPN's bottom line immediately improves because 103.3 won't be bleeding money out of the Mouse's bottom line.
6.What's in it for Cumulus? If they follow the Dickey Dos, they should be able to cut costs enough at ESPN to actually make some money.

Cumlus already operates two country stations and two talk stations (assuming you count KLIF) in the market with separate programming and air staffs. Adding ESPN just gives them more economies of scale, combo sales, combo promotions--and more power/influence to make life even more difficult for 105.3.

What's not to like?

I don't think this will make life more difficult for the Fan, I think it makes it easier. Its one less competitor to worry about. Everyone who's ever left the Fan has said that the Rally Cry over there is "Beat ESPN." Not the Ticket, which is unattainable, and we all know it. But from the Fan's perspective, I've got to think they're pretty happy right now with the latest events.

Wonder did the LMA ESPN did in NYC play into their decision to LMA KESN?

Hey everybody... I wanted to post my thoughts on the KESN/Cumulus deal and get some feedback. I am in the industry but as a fan of the Ticket and radio in general I have been trying to wrap my brain around this one.

From my humble perspective this breaks down as a great deal from ESPN, a good deal for Cumulus and a fair to poor deal for the Ticket as an individual station. Here is why:

1. Cumulus and other major radio co's trade stations like horses. I get it, that is their job to keep a strong portfolio of stations in local markets and nationwide.

2. ESPN is saving a bunch of money in a market they have not been able to win and getting paid for it.

3. The Ticket their Mngmnt and Sales team is now being ordered to run their station AND KESN on orders of their owner Cumulus.

So basically Cumulus is going to use their talent at KTCK to build a winner at KESN (hopefully) and is willing to pay KESN 1.2 mil a year for the privilege. In 5 years when this LMA is up ESPN can choose not to renew and thank the Ticket for building a stronger competitor. As far as Cumulus, they will make money quarter after quarter with the stronger marketing benefits (selling on the #1 and #2/ESPN Rangers and Mavs affiliate and who knows if they will even own KTCK at the end of this deal the way the buy/sell stations.

I don't know which I feel sorry for most the guys at KESN or the guys at KTCK. I guess at least the guys at the Ticket still have a job. Do I sound close in my analysis?

Another aspect that I have not seen mentioned so far is how this plays into the CC, Cume, et al, big corp cluster non-competition scenarios they so dearly love to foist upon the listening audience. Less competition produces a product of less quality.

Less competition = less expense = less effort = less quality.

The sports talk format in DFW has now reached the industry's corporate standard.
It brings to mind, from days gone by, when the nightclub TANGO was open down on LOWEST Greenville Ave and the guy that did the OXY 10 spots ("all over your face") voiced the commercials and in his LOWest voice would asked: "How LOW can you go?"

What was three competitors for this share is now only two: BIG DOG vs little dog. The short stick with which little dog has to fight just got A LOT shorter! An earlier comment did mention that The Fan's battle cry was to overtake ESPN and get to Number 2. Well, they made it. For all intents and purposes, ESPN Radio is now gone as a separate entity. The Fan is now Number 2... and has no chance of ever getting close enough to compete with the ticket/ESPN beast.

All's well and right in DFW corporate radioland tonight...

"Now shut up -- and dance!!!"

Wow, thanks Hans for the flashback :D

Meanwhile, away from the dancing frogs, I noticed only once since the ESPN-Cumulus deal was announced, it was *almost* referred to on-air one morning, but this was a tease to debut the new SportsDay Talk app. Also, I wonder how much longer the top-of-hour will still refer to 104.1 as part of the Ticket airwaves?

When I tune in to 104.1 on Sept. 1 and hear polka music, I'll know.
