Your thoughts on CBS 4 to WBZ re-branding?

We haven't talked about it much over here, but what does everyone think about the idea that CBS 4 in Boston might (probably) be renamed WBZ TV? Question 1, is it a good idea? Question 2, is it going to happen?

My vote is Yes, and yes.

Thoughts?

I think that it would be a smart move to revert back to the "WBZ-TV" branding. Hey, this station has over 58 years of TV experience and was the FIRST commercial TV station in Boston in 1948. Why mess with something that is a familiar name in Boston TV? "CBS-4" just doesn't sound right. It would be refreshing to hear those call-letters back on Channel 4. Everybody knows that Boston's Channel 4 is a CBS owned and operated station. Fine. But hiding such a repected set of call-letters such as WBZ-TV into a 2 second tiny fonted ID (only on the hour) is not wise. I hope they bring the WBZ-TV call-letters, ''front and center'' in the branding of the station. Hey, they tried to hide WCCO-TV's call-letters in Minneapolis in favor of yet another "CBS-4". It didn't work. So, 'CCO is front and center once again. Let's hope 'BZ will follow the same path.

But WCCO was always CBS and WBZ-TV was NBC for what like 40 years prior to the swap. I guess the real question is, is WBZ on Channel 4 on most cable systems if not then WBZ-TV makes more sense. Also has Boston got used to Channel 4 being CBS?

it will probably happen hand in hand with the overall news programming overhaul which
is way overdue. the big mistake julio the caretaker made was to do nothing with the state
of their news dept for the last three years. the new guy has his own ideas, but any fool
knows how failing their anchors are. addition of chris may is a step in the right direction, but they'll need new people on every newscast. clearly, lisa-jack-sara-ken pairings are dreadful and unwatchable. plus, re-signing lobel was a big scatter-brain move.

It may have something to do with the late UPN 38 rebranding itself into .......

It could have been My 38 but NO they chose to lock out My Network TV from Primetime HD access.

I think UPN 38 has NOTHING to do with this.

Please read my original post. Do you think WBZ TV will happen, and should it?

I applaud a return to calling channel 4, "WBZ-TV."

I have always referred to it as such and refrained from calling it anything else.
( I had the occasion to e-mail one of the long-time newspeople at channel 4 and he told me that even after a few years of calling it what they call it now, he still had to think before he spoke to call it "CBS4" and not WBZ-TV.)

Bring those call letters back!!!

Not just the first commercial TV station in Boston, but all of New England. It beat WNHC-TV Channel 6 in New Haven (Now WTNH News Channel 8) by a week. And getting on topic, you have WBZ NewsRadio 1030, it makes sense to return HERITAGE calls back to the forefront. WBZ-TV is as recognized a Boston TV station like WGBH-TV or WSBK-TV.

It's funny but, I found an old article online yesterday from 2003 where it had Ed Goldman talking about how people were still switching to Channel 4 for NBC shows still, and so they had to get the message out that they were now CBS. So as Dr. Phil would say "How's that workin' for ya, Ed?"

WBZ TV... Will happen? Should it happen?
Those are the questions...
