Your Thoughts on the In Memoriam Board

In trying to determine the best usability of the site for users, the one board that we have spent the most time discussing is this one.

For example, the recent posts about Tom Kent, Charlye Parker, and Guy Mainella should probably be on a respective region board as that's where the people who would know about those people congregate. Many of the other memorial tribute posts (such as actors and athletes) stretch the discussion as to what classifies as related to broadcasting.

What I'm proposing to do and want your input on is whether to refocus this board on the latter (while moving it to the Off The Air section) with posts about those who have passed related to radio or local television being placed in their respective board. I am aware of the poor usage of death posts in an "Off The Air" titled section and will likely rename that as part this change.

Your thoughts?

Many pro athletes and some actors were also broadcasters. If a prominent broadcaster dies (say they worked in New Orleans Radio most of their career), What is wrong with a thread in the New Orleans forum? It could also be in the general IN MEMORIAM forum. I never understood the need to move obituaries from say the Los Angeles board into the general one anyway.

I suppose there is some redundancy in having it in two places, but that seems to happen with many other Radio topics also. Thanks...

Tom Kent's a classic example of the dilemma. An obit on a regional board may not reach the audience who knew him nationally because of his syndicated show, or vice-versa.

And then there are the people whose work crossed disciplines. We had people on this board who thought of Mark Elliot as the Disney trailer voice guy, and were surprised to learn he was at KHJ, Los Angeles for many years (not to mention KFRC, San Francisco and CKLW, Detroit).

Let's take (as an example) Jay Thomas. Huge at WAPE in Jacksonville. Arguably big at 99X in New York. Successful for a few years at KPWR, Los Angeles. But he also had significant recurring TV roles (Mork & Mindy, Cheers, Murphy Brown).

As messy as it is, cross-posts may in fact be necessary.

My thoughts are: If a personality was currently or very recently working, it's a news story. Kat Simon would be an example. Radio Remembers Kat Simons – RadioInsight
Jim Scott was definitely a big name in Cincinnati.

As you mentioned, Tom Kent was known nationally. So was Kidd Kraddick when he suddenly passed away at his own charity golf tournament. So, national board?

I think the current In Memoriam has become a bit of a catch-all for all deaths of people who are in the public eye. I've probably raised more questions than answers.
