Your "traffic station"

The first station in DFW to do 24/7 traffic on the "8's" was "All News 94.9 KEWS". That station I believe can take credit for bringing traffic to the foreground in non-drive time hours. We had a lot of fun during the short life of the station but in it's brief amount of time on the air it was responsible for many firsts including traffic 24/7 and being an all news station on a full power class C from Cedar Hill.

Jason is right. KEWS started the 24/7 traffic. Shortly after KEWS went off the air, WBAP adopted 24/7 traffic. A few hours after WBAP announced its around the clock traffic, KRLD announced that "coming soon" would be 24/7 traffic. Both stations are still doing around the clock traffic, both serving their listeners well. KRLD stepped up its traffic reports in midday with the most recent return to all-news. WBAP does traffic updates on the quarter-hours, even in syndicated shows like Rush, so there is more than just top/bottom of the hour traffic on both stations. Both stations also provide dedicated reports for Collin and Denton Counties.

There are plenty of TalkRadio stations that SAY they have traffic reports around the clock. But often that means the local newscaster as an after thought will read one or two items off the traffic website during his top and bottom of the hour reports. After all, the syndicated shows only give the local stations X minutes per hour. Every minute you're doing a traffic report, you're doing one less minute of commercials.

So if that tanker truck overturns on I-30 at 2:33 on a Sunday afternoon, when will I hear that on WBAP or KRLD? Suppose it happens at 2:33 on a Sunday morning? When will I hear that on WBAP or KRLD?

Does WBAP really do four complete trarffic reports per hour during Rush and lose all that commercial time? Does KRLD cut into Clark Howard four times per hour, even when they're airing him late at night on weekends?

Any thoughts on why KRLD twice tried All-News and 94.9 also attempted an All-News format in Market #5 and all three attempts were unsuccessful?

Greg, when I hear the traffic during syndicated shows like Rush on WBAP they sound like full reports. I haven't timed them, though. And I recall KRLD doing 4 updates during Clark Howard the last time I listened to it. Both of these stations are doing a lot of traffic information. And even when they run syndicated shows, they are still both staffing their news and traffic departments around the clock. Which is a lot more than can be said for all the other radio stations in D/FW.

KEWS was great ! I would tune in 2 or 3 times a day to catch up on the latest. Was sorry to see it go.
