What business is that, Larry? The radio business, that AQH and I work in and you don't?

And spare us that "it's my choice" garbage. You'd come back in a heartbeat if you could.

As for the original post - he was paid to play music, not opine about it. You don't do what the boss tells you to do - you're fired.

I can see both sides of the coin here. Being in my 20s and learning how radio REALLY is -- AND -- doing what your PD tells you to do or you're out. If it sucked that bad, he could've walked away.

Not just you and AQH. Myself and several good people I know until somehow, somewhere, we all drew the line on how much bulls--t we were going to take from one industry.

If I wanted to stay in radio as it is presently. I'd have kept my mouth shut and sucked on. But I honestly don't. Not with the way things are currently.

Dude...in any job, not just in broadcasting. If you don't do as the boss says you're eventually kicked to the curb. How is that so hard for everyone to understand?
 
How green do you have to be to not know that radio stations support their artists, not trash them? I don't care how much you hate the music, you're the one who chose to work at a big corporate radio station. That means play by their rules or get the hell out. I love all these "misunderstood" people who decided to get into radio.

People go into radio usually because they love broadcasting, or they love music. From what I can see, theres not that much evidence that the "PD as Dictator"/Death penalty method of programming is actually so much more successful.

Seems like its more of a conjuntion of a whole bunch of Little Tyrants, and an absolute fear of risk-taking (along, lest we forget, with a VERY healthy dose of good ol' corruption and bribery).

I can't help but cheer for every single DJ that goes down guns blazing on the air. I really think radio's better for it.

Is this sarcasm? I'm assuming it is because you seem to be saying you think radio's better off without guys like this on the air. I don't necessarily agree.

Doesn't everybody in the business catch the drift (It's primarily about making money! GASP!) by the time they tour their first broadcast facility, though? And isn't this a good thing, since we want our stations to stick around?)

Opinions are good. Diplomacy is good, too.

If the DJs are supposed to play only what they like, what is the PD's job? Every business has a chain of command. Most businesses don't like it when employees break the chain. Jocks that want to play only the songs they want to hear should become PDs. Simple.
 
I meant that its good to stand up to the jerks. Its a pity that they lose jobs then, but I applaud their audacity.

Being a PD doesn't make you remotely infallable, and I might add, alot of the 'admitted' PD's on here are huge jerks. Not doing what your boss wants is asking to be fired, but being a dictatorial jerk more interested in protecting your absolute rule of your kingdom is just bad management... And also, in my not-so-humble opinion, bad radio.

So, in short, I'm glad when they go down blazing, because they're usually getting close to doing what they want, and for just a moment its a hint of better radio.
