You're The PD

Adopted from the L.A. radio board.

It's time for Radio's favorite new game....

YOU'RE THE PD!!!

Here's the scenario: a major radio corporation has hired you to bring a new station to Tampa. You have total control on EVERYTHING: programming, hiring, sales, promotions, you name it.

Feel free to post what you would do to have a successful station on in Market #19. Tell us about
who you'd have on the air, what kind of promotions you'd have, how would you market your station, who are your core artists, etc. The possibilties are endless! Have fun!!!

Is this a job interview?

Why do I get the feeling that the "winning" entry will become the result of Tampa Bay's next station flip, and the author will get no credit?

Don't take it personally. I'm skeptical of everyone since a friend heard some production elements from one of my old demos that I distributed to seven stations in Atlanta. He airchecked them, and sent me the tapes from Cleveland!

Yeah... I was disappointed. I didn't want to work in Cleveland.

OK... If it means we get a station I'd actually want to listen to in Tampa Bay I'd be glad to complete the assignment. Give me a day to meet with my corporate consultants, run some "out of market" music research, and ask my advertisers what THEY want to hear. ;-)

Great idea dude. We should stop exchanging productive radio ideas on these boards, and limit our posts to insulting each other and complaining about how radio sucks. (Check the Boston board for some examples).

Seriously, sorry someone ripped off your production, but if someone has the skills that people want to rip off, there are people who will also pay for those skills. If you don't share your skills/knowledge, nobody will realize you have something to offer.

Actually, this should be "you're the owner". Seems in today's world PD type decisions are already made on a corporate level and the PD is the "mechanic" who puts it in place and keeps the train on the track. Regardless, there are just a few approaches that could be successful here. A real slick and well done adult standards format with personalities who love and understand the genre. There is a station somewhere in Citrus on the AM doing it right. Second choice a "True Oldies" type format. Yes, 106.3 is filling that void, however, the audio is bad and all Scott Shannon can wear out. Good choice , though. Music of Your Life for the "new" old people. The third format that could work is (and I detest the name) JACK. Variety to the max. Again, all three of these formats should have pros on the air...live and in tune with the market.

Very good ideas, especially with REAL OLDIES and MOYL=type.

I'd even go for a powerful AM carrying either of those formats, such as the GULL.

Considering how the age demos are in the upper levels now, it would make sense to have more of this type of programming on the air.

Isn't there enough stations appealing to younger listeners? Why can't there be at least one station catering to older adult listeners?

Hi Guys,

I really don't mean to sound like the old broken record but...Dave and Lola came into Z-hills and wrecked small town AM (WZHR) with all that crap about and from Clearwater that means nothing to the audience here. Before TAN came in, ZHR was running Standards and Old Time Radio and high school sports mixed in. The demographics is pretty much Poli-Gripper especially during the winter. The format worked and the station was making money. Now it's pretty much dead air. Thanks Dave.

To bad more and more people are not willing to help out, share or just have a normal conversation with others. Yes, we are in a business in which people walk with idea's of others. But hey, look at radio all over the world, somehow, they all sound the same if you forget the different languages. So, yes, sometimes your numero uno prime idea gets jacked. Happend to me too in the past. You know it will happen someday and it will happen in the future. That doesn't mean Im gonna keep my mouth shut and dont wanna share information or whatever.

Again, you know if what kind of biz you are, it sucks sometimes, but just keep on going. We are all alike, we are radio junkies....
