You're the PD

Hypothetical.

I just bought a top 5 market station for a few million and it's a 100,000 boomer. As a private owner I hand you the proverbial keys and ask you to make me money while simultaneously pleasing a lot of folks. The format is open. The one thing I do insist on is that you hire DFW talent only.

Hire and name your staff and advise me of what format we'll be using.

HA HA!! Over 40 reads and NO replies!!

Is it because the first person to "play along" will get FLAMED like BK Stacker??
-No thanks.

Format: Modern Rock / Alternative / Americana - but here is the kicker – also play the music that influenced the “format”

Example – old 97’s (backed up with Flying Burrito Brothers and other early SoCal country rock – even some Nesmith)
Oasis – The Jam/Weller/Stone Roses

This gives you a station that can play not only “modern hits’ but the classics that influenced them.

You get the idea.

Think about the possibilities – A song comes on that you like and on the data stream you can add the bands influences and vise versa. The online presence would be great with a ton of opportunities. You keep the trendy kids happy and the old coots that know where the music came from!

“Playlist for the last half hour”

Old 97’s – St. Ignatius
Beck – Guess I’m Doin Fine
Guster – the Fa Fa song
Flying Burrito Brothers – Sin City
Oasis – Gas Panic
Jam – Carnation

Station Motto: NO NICKLEBACK – ALL THE TIME!!

Being handed a station to do whatever you choose...

and have to ONLY choose local talent???

Dallas is a top 10 market!?!?!?!?

**Insert FOGHORN sound effect**

Dallas is a Top 5 market.

Moreover, there is plenty of talent here.

Wow, I remain amazed by the number of cowards that frequent here.

I would finally bring Gospel to a full signal FM stick. I would negotiate to make the station the flagship for:

http://www.musicalsoulfood.com/

Since the network is locally based all the air personalities are local.

Wille Mae McIver would be the PD and Cedric Bailey would be the Music Director.
My target demo would be Black women 25-54, with a secondary demo of black adults 18-34. My sales force would work heavily in the local black community. There are plenty of small black businesses that would prime candidates to advertise on the station. No ministries on the schedule Monday-Saturday 6a to 10pm. Just the music. Most of the music will be upbeat, but we will have an old time gospel show. Minsitries will be part of the station. I will like to schedule them on Sundays from 6a to 12pm and the old time gospel show on Sunday afternoons. I am not afraid to say that Black folks are main target. Im going after KHVN and KKDA.

I'll make it a Smooth Jazz station, a REAL Smooth Jazz station, similar to what 106.1 was when The Oasis first started out.

And as much as I am a HUGE Genesis fan and love most of Phil Collin's music (till he wimped out and got all Disney on us!!!!), I would not be playing Genesis, Phil Collins, Gerry Rafferty, et al. I would play true, smooth jazz.

Rick Vanderslice, Tempe Lindsay, Trevor Lay, Lynn Briggs, (the guy after 7pm CANNOT THINK OF HIS NAME !!) to start with and I'm willing to a hire a few more, just name some of them.

Exactly what the world needs is 100,000 watts of dentist office muzak droozling 24/7.

You "smooth jazz" mongoloids need to get this through your tin-eared, graph-paper-brained skulls:

"smooth jazz" is NOT JAZZ. Jazz is music that is meant to be listened to. "Smooth Jazz", by contrast, is little more than auditory wallpaper. And it just so happens that it's a splendidly ugly wallpaper. A horrifying, gaudy floral pattern with garish gold stripes. Like a couch on the TBN set.

Salemjedi54, I like that concept. I believe the black market (not that one!) is being neglected. Rather than being pigeonholed into hip hop and soul 24/7, gospel would be a cool addition to the dial. I'm white and I'd listen.

I also like the idea of a jazz station albeit not necessarily an all smooth format. Mix jazz?

Why so much trust in Mike Shannon? I don't know him personally but I like his webpage and what he's put together.

Hey Smirk, to each his own. Everyone can be wrong at least once in a lifetime, today it's your turn. :)

Seriously, the Smooth Jazz format had a loyal following in the DFW area, yet it wasn't pulling in the advertising revenue it needed to pull in, from what I've read on this forum, and I'm not even in the radio bizz.

I don't necessarily think of it being splendidly ugly wallpaper either. That would be Muzak, in my opinion.

There are a number of very good Smooth Jazz artist, Dave Koz, David Sanborn, Boney James, George Benson, Mindi Abair, Joyce Cooling, et al. If it is not a format you don't like, don't listen to it. That is what I do with country and western stations. In fact, I don't think my car radio could even BEAR to play a country and western song. The speakers would blow up. :)

Then come down here and develop it, since you know talent!!!!!!!

Since you asked.....If I was going to look for and develop radio talent, I
would not be looking in radio today. The last three generations of radio djs have no clue how to be radio personalities or do humor. I would rather look for talent from comedy clubs and teach them how to do it on the radio.
It is easier to teach someone, with a quick mind, and the ability to do sideways thinking, how to do radio rather than teach someone in radio how to do sideways thinking and have a quick mind.

So I guess you never hear of Steve Harvey, Rickey Smiley or Russ Parr. All have done radio here in Dallas.
