I’m not sure, but I think Steve Smith was the Program Director (and/or the consultant?) at Power in the early 90’s, when they had a more hip-hop-oriented approach (similar to Power 106 LA & Hot 97 NYC at the time).

If I recall correctly, Rick Stacy became the PD in early 1994, when they tried a Rock-leaning Mainstream CHR format. The numbers dropped, so that lasted about 9 months – more rhythmic music returned to the playlist by the Fall of 1994, making Power a very balanced Mainstream CHR.

At some point between then and November 1995 (the date of the aircheck), I believe that Don Parker took over as PD. All of the Rock product was phased out, resulting in what you hear on the aircheck – and their numbers improved dramatically. At one point, they had something like a 7 share 12+.

“The New 103.9” (KBZR/KPTY) came along in the Fall of 1996 with a hip-hop-friendly format. It became enough of a thorn in Power’s side to make them go all hip-hop/R&B (similar to their format today) by June 1997 – and I think Steve Smith returned as a consultant, and Bruce St. James took over as PD around this time as well. Power went to #1 12+ shortly after these changes (the first time in the station’s history that happened, IIRC) and it forced 103.9 to change about a year later.

If Steve Smith was indeed involved with the station at that time, I don’t know how long it was before he left.

Wrong and Wrong.

Station NEVER went to # 1 12+ under BSJ.

The name was Don Parker - took over after Stacy tanked it with ALTERNATIVE.

Parker took it to a mid seven share.

Bruce Kelly still mornings until June 1998.
Snake left to 103.9 mornings and .... well......
Parker left in late '97 wneh BSJ came and hired Kid/Rube to PM Drive.

Thank you for the clarification. It was unclear to me when Don Parker left and when Bruce St. James arrived. I wasn't sure how long Parker was around following the transition from "Today's Hottest Music" to "Where Hip-Hop Lives" in June 1997.
