And for Citadel employees it was a new company severance agreement; letting you know what you'll receive based on your time there. This unfortunate little omen is generally a precursor to an upcoming exodus....and that your music logs and programming direction will be arriving daily from Atlanta. No deviations please.

Not a big surprise, right? The questions remain....who survives the cuts? Will JBQ's ratings dominance guarantee jobs for the jocks? Will Herb & Company's longevity mean squat? Does HOM and CYY's relatively low ratings mean there's going to be a flood of out-of-work jocks calling Randi or Stan?

Yes.....

I'll totally give up on radio if they mess with WJBQ. It would be like if they had gutted WQCB when they bought the Bangor cluster. Yeah, I know they messed with QCB in ways that some thought they shouldn't have, but the core station stayed on the air.

Both are #1 in their markets, and presumably high billers. You don't buy a BMW and put a Yugo engine in it cause it saves gas.

Do you?

You can't put anything past a bunch of DJ's and college yuppie boys who get jobs overseeing radio stations on a corporate level. If there are two backgrounds that breed arrogance more than those two, I haven't encountered anybody from them.

I guess to answer your query you'd have to ask the entire airstaff of WTOS with the exception of Tom & Mike...

About a year or so ago, WCYY did a "They fired all the on-air staff" gimmick for a week or so. Hoping that the same thing isn't about to happen for real, but the signs look pretty bad here.

From what I understand the new owners have set up national formats that are similar to Clear Channel's so called "Premium Choice"....and if that is accurate....look for "repeater radio" to enter Portland...and a lot of local jocks to exit....

Consider also, if there is a mass layoff at Citadel/Cumulus, those happily employed but "underperforming" types at the other more "stable" groups will now have a handful of folks willing to work cheaper! It's a great time to be a beancounter at Nassau and PRG!

I just used the word "stable" referring to Portland radio! I kill me!

Cheers,

You're right, but even a failed gimmick like the old "they fired us" routine doesn't compete with a house cleaning like they did in the Augusta/Waterville - Bangor markets. WTOS had two things going for it...AM and PM Drive and when they walked Rush out the door they didn't even let him get his personal belongings... When you use the word "stable" when talking about radio...the truest definition is the "stable" of voices they have under the roof that VT across entire clusters. Studios that have never seen a live jock, shifts that are recorded hours or days in advance...want to know a tell tale sign for those not working in radio? Count the number of shows that actually mention the "time" and...get it right. If there is never a time mentioned...fact is that jock is probably wearing their WalMart nametag by the time that show is on the air. Please don't get me wrong...I love this industry...and every day on a mic is a blessing...my sincerest best wishes to anyone currently in one of the current "sinking ship" situations. There is a ton of truly talented jocks in Maine...and hopefully the majority of them will still have gigs when the other shoes start to drop.

So I saw in a earlier post of who would make the first cut and who would be calling Randi or Stan........As of late friday night I had heard from others in Cumulus that a format change was coming to the Q. Something like a cross between HOM and Moose 92!

as i've said before, in portland the cuts are going to be deep and across the board. Cumulus has no interest in live, locally programed radio. Look at the other stations they run. The none of the Bangor stations are a great listen, they do well because the blueberry stations are almost unlistenable. Thank god BLM is rolling one last A to Z. Still I find it hard to believe that they would mess with JBQ that much, change the format and sound ? Really ? I'm sure the billing for JBQ must be high. Same said for BLM.

I'm not so sure the Q bills as much as some of you may think. The achilles heal of the station is that over a third of the total audience is between 12 -24. This is a lot and is simply not the target audience for the majority of local advertisers. It's very hard for a local advertiser to overcome the thought that a third of their advertising dollar is simply going to waste to reach the older, more desireable listener the station has.
I think Butter's post makes some sense in that, that move, would age the station and lessen the dominant teen demo that does hurt from a revenue perspective.

With that being said, the Q could easily become the Hot AC of the market and squash WMGX in a matter of minutes. And they know it. WMGX would have a hard time becoming the CHR because they do not currently have the personel anywhere to pull it off. HOWEVER, WMGX could become the AC of the market because WHOM's big achilles heel is that they are not "home" to anywhere. You can listen for an entire hour and think your listening to a NH radio station based on the ads. No one equates WHOM as being "Portland"

I hope Cumulus doesn't change WJBQ to Hot AC because I prefer the way they sound now. If they do change the format I will have to listen to 95.3 WSKX for CHR.
