This whole mess could benefit SAGA.Chances are most of the "JBQ staff will be gone.SAGA could grab some of them and go CHR on 98.9.Then put 'MGX up against WHOM.I think WHOM could easily be beat because of their poor signal(five states and Canada)but not very well in downtown Portland. If it's like other CUMULUS stations 'JBQ will probobly have one local person on.Do people really like these entertainment shows like Seacrest,Dees,Bush etc-?'JBQ could end up with Seacrest,Dees and Bush if 'MGX gets rid of Bush.

I suspect when the notices go out, we'll be reading about it on Facebook first. RE: the Q Morning Show, Lori Voornas is bulletproof, i bet.

Underminer, I had no idea we were friends on Facebook. I'm flattered.

With that being said, the Q could easily become the Hot AC of the market and squash WMGX in a matter of minutes. And they know it. WMGX would have a hard time becoming the CHR because they do not currently have the personel anywhere to pull it off. HOWEVER, WMGX could become the AC of the market because WHOM's big achilles heel is that they are not "home" to anywhere. You can listen for an entire hour and think your listening to a NH radio station based on the ads. No one equates WHOM as being "Portland"

Excellent point...HOM may be a "signal" giant but as long as I can remember I have never heard it positioned as "Portland's" anything??? You would imagine with their range that location androgyny might be an effective sales tool with national ads or out of state business but who do their local sales team visit for new business? How do they sell the local idea? Or is their sales team another group of those..."new business? What's new business?" type sales people that rest on the accounts that have been handed to them...? Regardless...what about the talent? The actual product? The people that provide the billable commodity? Are they going to find themselves on the curb? That would eventually allow finding the common root cause of all failures more clear and easier to finally shine the light on... Try starting the axe where the least amount of work is done...owners would find much smoother running and profitable machines if they did things that way instead of displacing someone that truly works for a living...but I digress...Old Port, you got anything cold to drink?

I was a Portland-based salesman at WHOM around 1989-91. While I obviously can't say with precision how today's salespeople respond to the questions you've raised, my hunch is that it's not dramatically different.

Any salesperson will tell you that answering a prospect's objections is part of the process. Prospects will throw you all kinds of reasons not to buy your station. As a Portland salesman, my prospects often said "you guys sound like a New Hampshire station." Our NH-based salespeople often heard "you guys sound like a Portland station." It's really the responsibility of the salesperson to use his skills to answer those objections effectively. Believe me, we had no problem answering them. We held our rates well and the station was often close to sold out 6A - 7P.

My competitors at other Portland stations often said to prospects "don't buy WHOM - you're paying for all that coverage that you don't need." When prospects relayed that to me, my response was "we don't price the station based on the coverage. It's priced to be competitive in Portland and Southern Maine and to tell your story to local consumers who might patronize your store. If someone in North Conway happens to hear about you, what's the downside? " And that was absolutely true.

Back then, WPOR and WBLM had the highest rates in Portland. WHOM was either in the upper third or in the middle of the pack. It was never one of the bottom-feeders.

The presence of New Hampshire advertisers or other NH on-air content never was a problem for me as a Portland-based salesman. It was simply an objection - a minor objection - to be addressed.

Sidebar: I loved selling WHOM and had complete confidence in the station. I started selling there in the final months of the beautiful music format and was there over the transition to soft AC. In both formats, being with 'HOM was a source of pride for me. Even when cold-calling, I found that WHOM was usually recognized and respected by business people in Southern Maine.

I got the best sell for the Q!! Show during the same time slot: The MJ Morning Show....Its sorta like the Q morning show now....Its centered around a stuck up know it all and his morning side kicks that depending on the day he threatens to hire live on the air! Now isn't that just like the Q morning show? Although I just cant figure out who the stuck up know it all is: Lori or Jeff?

So I saw in a earlier post of who would make the first cut and who would be calling Randi or Stan........As of late friday night I had heard from others in Cumulus that a format change was coming to the Q. Something like a cross between HOM and Moose 92!

Could this be what Cumulus has in mind for 'JBQ?
Just before the JULY 4th holiday, CUMULUS Top 40 WRMW (i94)/INDIANAPOLIS quietly shifted to a noticeably more musically adult direction, that looks like Adult Top 40 or Hot AC.

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/a...40-wrwm-indianapolis-now-decidedly-more-adult

I hope not.It would be horrible not to have a CHR in Portland.

Probably not. Two reasons.

1. There are TWO other CHR's in that market that are far more successful than WRMW. It had to change to something. I'm not sure this is enough of a change because it is just buried in the ratings.
2. CHR is doing very well right now and WJBQ is reflective of it.

With that being said, I do think WJBQ could make this change and just blow WMGX out of the water. It's barely hanging on, if at all, right now. The morning show is simply awful. The rest of the station simply sounds slow and old.
Saga is going to have to simulcast WGAN on one of the FM's otherwise it will be a ratings and revenue disaster when the Portland Market Metro redefinition begins in the Fall. WMGX is as good of an option as any that they have.
