Yreka-Weed-Mt Shasta Radio Happenings

While KSYC (Yreka) still is on the air Buffalo Broadcasting has silenced KHWA in Weed.. Likwise, KHWA's 101.7 translator was running dead air; I did not check their second translator frequency as to its status.. . The local area economy has experienced rough times but a call to station suggests they'll bring back KHWA at some point; it's not for sale.

Buffalo dropped some time ago stopping Internet streaming of KSYC audio , likely as a cost-cutting measure.

Buffalo Broadcasting formally submitted a request on 11 January to take KHWA silent due to Covid-19 downturn on advertising revenue. The FCC approved the request on 4 May. (This would include translators K257CA,K269AT). Sister station KSYC-FM continues on the air.

"AS A RESULT OF COVID-19 AND GOVERNMENT-MANDATED SHELTER IN PLACE ORDERS WHICH HAVE SEVERELY IMPACTED LOCAL BUSINESSES, LICENSEES ADVERTISING REVENUE HAS SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED. THE STATION HAS HIGH OPERATING COSTS, INCLUDING UTILITY EXPENSES, AND MUST GO OFF THE AIR UNTIL ECONOMIC CONDITIONS IMPROVE."

KHWA, KSYC-FM and three translators are currently under transfer (sale) to Southern Oregon University (Jefferson Public Radio)..

When I looked on Google Earth for tbe KHWA (Weed) transmitter site on the high southwest slope of Mt. Shasta I could not find anything.. Did this now-silent station move at some point?. The 15.5kw ERP signal almost touches Redding with its 60dBu contour.
