In the 5 O'clock hour today MMR had the gall [sic] to play the Who, Hendrix, Petty, Whitesnake, Doors and the usual predictable Peppers, Nirvanna and Greenday, now think about it who wants to hear this ANYMORE....doesn't MGK play most of this with the injection of the slower bands and solo artists. If YSP went wild and played either the Alt Nation or Octane formats they would blow MMR out of the water...
Isn't alternative music what Radio 104.5 is for?
You must not be a fan of alternative music. Radio 104.5 is "Alternative" in the loosest sense of the word. They have to be easily one of the safest, tamest "Alternative" stations I have ever heard. They have a "shut up and play the music" approach similar to the Jacks and Bens of the world, but they have a playlist that's about half the size or less of those stations. The only titles they ever play from the '80s are the most mainstream U2, Police, Clash, R.E.M. (all I've heard were the big hits from
Document) and Depeche Mode (just "People Are People" or
Violator-era) songs - they never play any Pixies, Replacements, Smiths, XTC, and others too numerous to count. They also work over the same tired Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Stone Temple Pilots titles that by now are firmly ensconced on many a classic rock playlist. They are playing an extremely minute amount of new music (maybe 20 songs?). They take liberties with the format they supposedly represent, playing a lot of non-Alternative acts like The Fray, All American Rejects and Lifehouse. And finally, there's absolutely no listener interaction to be found here ... they never do any request shows, and a couple of their special features on their website consist of
one song. I can picture it now: "Hey, let me stop what I'm doing for a couple of minutes so I can hear the one special song that Radio 104.5 is playing!". Worse still, most of the songs played on the "Bonus Track" feature get played regularly on many true Alternative stations across the country.
Let's call Radio 104.5 what they are: Adult Rock Hits of the '80s, '90s & Today,
NOT an Alternative station. If a real Alternative came to the Philly market, I think a lot of Radio 104.5's listeners would abandon ship. They don't let their personalities speak enough for the listener to make a connection with them, and the music mix is very stale and has largely remained the same since they signed on two years ago.
