ysp could of survived without stern

all these free fm threads making regard to.... "if Stern was still there they would be number one, what you are all saying is the music had no influence...WRONG"....if so, then why is MMR numero uno...its the type of music as watered down as it may be, its still non-urbanic in nature, and the audiance wants to hear Rock in any form. If YSP went in the direction of Active they were evolving in, even though Stern was toast they would of still been top 5 and that would even occur if the morning show was music intense. YSP sounded the best when they unloaded Classic Rock, circa 1996, hired DeBella, Cerf, Toxic and Grease played music, grunge was hot, Active was hot and Alternative was hot, YSP could still be top 5 material. Why anyone won't admit that Rock music is popular and receives fantastic ratings baffles the mind.

I think WMMR's strong morning show numbers and the fact that they don't really have a direct competitor may be why.

I'm just ... putting it out there.

If YSP went in the direction of Active they were evolving in, even though Stern was toast, they would've still been top 5 - and that would even occur if the morning show was music intens[ive]

With all due respect, Any other rock station would be just another choice that would detract from WMMR's rock audience. I'm sure there's some audience sharing between WMGK and WMMR as well ... but since they're owned by the same company - the money's in the same pair of pants, just in a different pocket.

The point is that Stern's numbers were what pulled that station's numbers up higher than WMMR's. For example, I worked at a station where the morning show was number one across the board in every demo - and had a 15 share in demo. So, how do you think the overall station numbers were, even though they lost half the audience right when midday started?

Do the math ... even on straight average, that one significantly higher daypart made a huge difference - and that station was always in the top 3.

But as for winning mornings with a music intensive morning show against Preston & Steve? No. Not possible.

Top 5? Eh. Maybe. But WMMR would still come out ahead.

Remember - if you can KILL in mornings, the other dayparts don't necessarily have to perform as well ... their spots just get sold for less money.

Awesome! Another WYSP vs. WMMR thread!

That's right! Runswithscissors needs as many threads as possible to make the same point, duh.

And I like madcowzack's point. MMR and horrible P&S do well in a large part by default. Maybe I'll go start a new thread about it.

And Greater Media is laughing all the way to the bank. Isn't it amazing that Infinity/CBS never had a plan-B to go to if/when (pre-Sirius thinking) Stern left? You had all these Infinity/CBS stations doing very well overall thanks to one daypart and no one bothered to sit down and figure out what would happen "if."

The result? Heritage stations being blown-up left and right (K-Rock, WYSP, etc.), David Lee Roth, FM radio turning to satellite radio to fill morning drive in major markets (can you imagine the NAB meetings that day), and the "Free FM" name.

Whooda thunk that 94.1/Philadelphia and 92.3/New York would both be out of the top 20 12+? Whooda thunk that the mighty CBS Radio would own a 100KW FM station in San Francisco and a 870-watt rimshot country station beats it every book?

They had a Plan B. It got fired in August of 2002. It's on in mornings now, but without that extra four years of audience-building.
