YSP is Rocking!

Anyone take notice that they are playing all the metal tunes and bands, in particular during Spike's show?

On the other hand I have noticed that WMMR is trying to "keep up", to me it would make more sense for WMMR to stick to doing what they do best and let YSP handle the harder edge rock!

Thoughts?

I've been meaning to turn the station on to see if the sound would take a different direction than the last few months, now that their new on-air staff is just about complete.

It makes perfect sense to go back to active rock to separate themselves from MMR. There's no point in trying to imitate the competition. The rock audience can only benefit.

I'm looking forward to see what kind of effect Jennifer Reed will have in the market. I don't think we've seen a strong female personality used to attract a young demo except as a sidekick to a male lead personality. Based on her photos, the fanboys will drool over their radios while listening!

Ding Ding! Winner!

Sorry to all you Couzin Ed fans out there but the hiring of a female personality for the 3-7 shift was one of the smartest moves YSP has made, this will ultimately result in Jaxon's audience being cut in half.

It's a slam dunk that they will market the hell out of her and that smoking body!

Kim Douglas must be thinking, "Damn, why couldn't they have kept me on and paired me with her?" ;D

for people who dont want the edgier shit like korn soad and tool, ZZO is what you need not MMR or YSP

I don't think a male/female tandem would be good for that time slot ;D

In the meantime, K-Rock in New York will be flipping to Country according to O&A. If WYSP doesn't perform to CBS expectations, will they park a new format at 94.1? We'll see.

I doubt VERY MUCH that CBS would do that to K-Rock. I think it's just O&A trying to cause trouble for trouble's sake.

YSP should be back for quite some time. Even if they're not the powerhouse they were before Free FM, they're destined to perform better as a rock station.

I think that rumor is definitely sour grapes on O&A's behalf.

With the PPM-friendly rock format, I doubt WYSP or even WXRK (where PPM is months away) would change at this point, but anything is possible.

It was just a joke.

I'm sampling WYSP's playlist and I can't say I'm too impressed. Someone described the station as "Hard Rock" ... far from it. The other night I heard them playing the likes of Motley Crue, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard (Hot AC staple "Hysteria", no less!), and lots of corporate rock dullards Green Day and Linkin Park. Tonight they have played a lot of the same acts, along with wimpy pop (Red Hot Chili Peppers - Tell Me Baby) and Incubus's insufferably corny ballad "Drive". Looks like old time rock and lame tired corporate rock are the order of the day at WYSP.

Equally lame: Technically 11 songs that could be considered Currents, and lame corporate hacks Linkin Park have 2 of them (Alice In Chains' "Would?" and The Offspring's "Self Esteem" were #12 and #13 on the playlist chart).

If CBS wants to do an Active Rock format, they would do well to study WZBH (93.5 The Beach - http://www.wzbhrocks.com ). This is how it's done. The only older rock that they play is Ozzy/Black Sabbath and Metallica and maybe a couple of other harder acts (no Pink Floyd or Van Halen, thank goodness), and they also spin lots of the harder stuff that WYSP is afraid of playing. You won't hear Five Finger Death Punch, Bullet For My Valentine, Mudvayne, Nonpoint and others on YSP, because they're too busy playing lots of safe wuss rock that you're probably sick of hearing. While they're nowhere near as bad as the chicken rock mess that is NYC's only Rock station, K-Rock, WYSP still has a long way to go before they become remotely interesting. I for one hope they will decide to step out of WMMR's shadow, rather than sounding like a virtual MMR doppelganger.

Soulcrusher ---

Sadly, YSP IS a good sounding rock station compared to the majority of the borefests across the nation.
I guess the demo just doesnt support the sponsors. Long live rap....

It all started going downhill when "Against the Wind" became a hard rock song on Classic Rock.

94% of the time I've tuned into WYSP since they flipped back to rock, they've been playing Led Zepplin or an 80's hairband HIT. Case in point, around 1:56 Saturday or Sunday morning, I turned on my radio. WYSP? Zepplin. WMMR? The Foxboro Hot Tubs (new Green Day stuff they released under a different name). All YSP is now is safe HITS, spinning the recent Red Hot Chili Peppers songS like they all came out YESTERDAY, still pushing Linkin Park's "What I've Done" while ignoring "Bleed It Out" all the while. Their format is FAR from active rock.

Wait, who was playing Foxboro Hot Tubs? WYSP or WMMR?

Either way, kick ass.

Guys tune in to Spike's midday show and tell me he is not rocking with rare hard cuts, then flip over to boring Pierre and listen to his citizens work force speach then back to the same spin of the same records and artists.\He plays a work force blok of Pearl Jam at least six times a month!!!!!!

And by the way all rock stations play the safe corporate rock cuts....

Now I agree with you here. SPIKE is the one doing the "rocking", I think the station is okay with him straying from the list, but tune in any other time. And its the same stuff over and over.

Really, the only time WYSP ever really breaks away from the norm is during the request hour at noon on weekdays. Other than that, I saw a few songs that surprised me sprinkled in (they played Slipknot, but it was the predictable "Wait And Bleed"), but mostly just lots of safe rock songs thar are no different from what we hear constantly on WMMR.

Who's going to listen to this station unless they show a little courage and break away from the usual Red Hot Chili Peppers / Green Day / Linkin Park and all the dinosaur rockers constantly? We have a station that does that already, and on top of that they even play more new music! WYSP needs to break away from the wuss rock and turn into Philly's "Rock With An Edge" in order to stand out from the competition. No more Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, and less of today's chicken rock - more Korn, SOAD, Mudvayne, Static-X, Deftones and acts not afraid to use screaming in their music. WYSP needs to go for a sound like WZBH, WJRR in Orlando, and WJSE in Atlantic City - they need to spin the heavier rock that no one else plays. WRFF is finally starting to find itself and is sounding more like a real Alternative station now - how long will it take WYSP to ditch the safe titles that we can hear everywhere else?
