Z-100 MAY HAVE GREAT #S BUT WHERE'S THE COMPETITION?

I'll still take the Z-100 from 1983 to 1986 over the current Z-100. The "old" Z-100 had to deal with a "young" KISS-FM (born in 1981) & Larry Berger over at WPLJ. And a third CHR...103.5 THE APPLE WAPP.

Look at today's Z-100. No other CHR in the market. Plus, they use the other Clear Channel radio stations to stay away from Z-100's listeners. Folks in the biz would say Cubby Bryant is the best PM driver. No way. I think Cubby is overrated. Can Cubby bring WKTU in the Top 5 in Am drive (12+)? I think not.
Magic Matt Alan was the best PM drive jock in Z-100's history. You could put a quacking duck in PM drive at Z-100 & the duck would pull a 3 share (providing Z-100 has no CHR competitor).

where's the competition? three things that the old Z didn't have to contend with;
home video games over power the interest in popular music;
the internet;
the i pod

Gotta agree with lalumia's points, plus the fact that today CHR's share audience with so many more niche stations (i.e. Rap, R&B, Modern Rock, Alt. Rock, )..plus Z100 at the time came along right after WABC abandoned their audience, PLJ hadn't figured out how to do CHR with attitude and hip appeal(can't quite figure out why Larry Burger is given so much credit, he had a head start on Z100 and failed to produce)...there was a built in audience just sitting there waiting for a good CHR, which they got in Z100....but, to say today's z is inferior is so much the old cliche of comparing apples and oranges....Cubby is regarded as being one of today's best by those in the industry because those not in the industry(listeners) have said so year after year in the ratings....He understands today's pop culture and has delivered and connected with the audience from the first time he cracked the mic in market # 1...take nothing away from Magic Matt and the crew from those early days, but what Cubby has meant to NY radio in this generation (where jocks read liner cards and have no identity) is truly an accomplishment....and having the pleasure to meet him on more than one occasion he's truly a class act. For most people, the favorite songs, favorite stations, favorite DJ's happen in the period of years from junior high through college...i don't think you're being objective for those reasons Springfield.

You don't get it. I'm talking about competition on the radio dial (not outside factors). Why are you putting video games & the Net into this? Malrite didn't have five other radio stations in the market to protect the Z. Plus, the early Z-100 had to deal with a blazin' new kid on the block...Howard Stern. WNBC was playing Top 40 music too.

Larry Berger did produce a #1 rated radio station. I would have to go back and look at my old Radio & Records. PLJ was #1 when Willie B. Goode was doing nights. Most books Shannon did beat PLJ.

I'm not comparing apples & oranges. Both are radio stations.

I believe Cubby will never get KTU in the top 5 in am drive. Never! Overrated!

Awwww....man. I'm "Overrated"? Oh, well. You can't please them all. ;D However, I REALLY appreciate the other kind words about me from the other folks on this board, seriously, THANK YOU. Regarding the question "Can Cubby bring KTU Morning Drive Top 5 12+?" Listen, I would love that more than anything in the world, but it's all about 25-54 with KTU and thats the first thing we look at when the numbers come out. It's a shame those numbers are never printed because 12+ can be very cosmetic. Cubby and Cindy in mornings are up 2.7 to 3.0 (#11) 25-54 P, and up 3.4-3.6 (#9) W 25-54. We've been on since January with no marketing, can't say we're not trying. Thank You all for the love (except for that Springfieldrad person who hates me, LOL) this is my first time on this board and I just thought I'd say "Hello"

Regards,
Cubby

At least we got to hear from Cubby. Everyone has their best jocks. If you ask me, Matt Alan did the best job in PM drive. Second place....Elvis. He was out of control doing that shift. I also enjoyed Cat Simon (the first pm driver) & Shadow. And I would put Cubby in 5th place in the history of Z-100 doing that shift.

I don't hate you (LOL). I just get upset when folks don't give credit to guys like Matt Alan. If I remember correctly Matt replaced Shadow (I think Steve Miller filled in when Z-100 was looking for the next pm driver). I remember Scott Shannon telling me I was going to like this kid they hired from Houston (Matt Alan). Shannon was 100% on target.

Yes, 12+#s are the beauty numbers. What counts for KTU is 25-54 females.

Definitely great to see one of the best jocks in the world post on Radio Info. You're a huge part of the reason why Z-100 sounded so good for a decade, plain and simple. Best of luck to you at KTU.

On second thought, I believe it was PAT McKAY who filled in.
