Z-100's Romeo is out...

It would be awesome for Romeo to go to Pulse 87 and host its morning show, and bring his fan base down the dial to 87.7. If MMDA's share price was about the price of a can of soda, I'm sure it would jump on this opportunity.

One of my friends on myspace posted a blog and there it was "ROMEO IS NO LONGER AT Z-100" see it for yourself.

According to the blog (which is a blatant cut-and-paste from fmqb.com, replacing Romeo in mid-February will be Billy The Kidd, from CC's Kiss station in Dallas.

And here's a big shock: The article states "he’s happy that he will remain on-the-air in ....Dallas.... where he's been dominating nights on KHKS for the past 5 years."

So it looks like this Billy the Kidd is going to be the next job-eliminating, cost-cutting, boy-wonder from Clear Channel. He'll probably have 100 stations by April.

And what's the deal with all these radio guys calling themselves "Kidd" spelled with two D's? Billy The Kidd... Kidd Kraddick... Kidd Chris... Kidd Kelly... It's all Color Me Badd's fault...

so is he going to be live in NYC and track for Dallas? or the other way around?

It's all the same cookie" cutter" Texas crap. Cutting down jobs just like George Bush and other idiots from Texas have done for this country. I'm sure he'll live out here, for the "DDream Experience". With what they offer, he'll probably live in New Jersey because he sure as hell won't be able to afford New York. THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT NEW YORK and here come more mispronunciations of our cities. I still hear them. COOKIE- "CUTTER" In ever sense of the word. All they ever sound like is like they read and add the extra "D" to give them street credibility. I'm tired of the Texans, they have destroyed radio and this country. :'(

The unwarranted negativity on this board really bothers me sometimes. I've never had the chance to listen to Billy at length, but my understanding is that he's quite good. Congrats to him on the promotion, nights on Z100 is the opportunity of a lifetime! They don't just hand that gig to anyone.

To answer a few questions posed already - Billy is apparently moving to NYC and will track back to DFW. Secondly, the poster who said all CC CHRs sound the same has clearly never actually bothered to listen to them, especially not to Z100, one of the most unique and exciting Top 40s in the country.

A question of my own - is Billy taking over the MD reins? Romeo and Sharon have done an exceptional job at keeping Z's music on point, but KHKS has quietly become another well-balanced station where hits get started. Consequently, I'd think Billy would have a good sense of how to steer Z100 in that regard.

Finally, an interesting point. For about a year and a half, the KHKS staff consisted of Cruz (Jeff Miles) in middays, JJ Kincaid in PM Drive, and Billy the Kidd at night. Well... the former now holds down middays at PLJ, and the latter two are on Z100! So from 10A-2P, New York listeners can get a taste of 106.1 KISSFM circa 2005-06. Not a bad lineup!

All Clear Channel CHRs sound similar. Some lean rhythmic (Kiss 95.7, Q102, Q94), some lean rock (KC101, 96.5 Kiss FM), some are balanced (Z100, Kiss 108), some even lean dance (93.3 'FLZ). Clear Channel owns hundreds of CHR stations, yet they all sound like one of the 4 I mentioned.
Some people from Texas might be bad, but as they say, don't mess with Texas.

First off, did you get Q94 and 96.5 KISSFM confused? Because neither belong in the category wherein you placed them. And just because FLZ plays slightly more dance than the average Top 40 doesn't mean it's "dance-leaning."

You state that CC's CHRs fall into one of three or four musical categories isn't an indictment by any means. That's just the way Top 40 radio is, regardless of ownership. What do you expect, a Smooth Jazz or Country-leaning CHR?

Bringing things back on topic...I can't name a single CC CHR with identical music programming to Z100. They're always on top of new music and the station sounds undeniably New York.

Q94 is the CHR in Richmond, VA. My few times passing through RIC this past year, I heard it play a lot of hip hop. 96.5 Kiss FM is the CHR in Cleveland, OH.

The person that made the previous comment obviously isn't a New Yorker. yeah ok.. z100 does NOT sound New York. The only person that did make it sound that way was Romeo. Sceery jones and Danielle in the morning- that's it from what i hear. It's something you can't learn, called the school of hard Knocks.

I never professed to being a New Yorker. But Z100 is hip and on the cutting edge when it comes to new music, which is exactly how a NYC station should sound. Just because they don't play 24/7 dance music doesn't mean they don't sound New York. It's all relative for the format. And for the record...Z100 is more dance-friendly than 99.9% of CHR's in the country.

Z's music wouldn't fly in Nashville or Des Moines - or in Texas, since some of you seem so hung up on that. As far as jocks go...an entertaining personality transcends regional origin. I don't care where JJ Kincaid or Billy The Kidd are from (and for the record, I doubt either are from Texas even though they worked there previously), they're damn good jocks and New York wouldn't be embracing them if that wasn't the case.

Thank God for the lone star state. Cause all my ex's live in Texas! ;D

How many times can you be wrong in one paragraph? Billy sounds great so you clearly have never heard him. As for what "THEY" offer, there is a very high AFTRA minimum you obviously know nothing about and even at minimum, a person can live in NYC. He isn't from Texas, Detroit actually. You know who else at Z100 is from Texas? Their PD Sharon Dastur who never mispronounces towns, JJ, same, Shelley Wade and oh yeah, Elvis Duran who is one of the top Morning guys in Radio. Yeah..Texas sucks. I suppose all of your radio icons are from Queens? And exaclty what cities would be mispronounced in this area? Jersey City? New York City? Lefrak City? Oh wait, you meant towns and boroughs.....so what do YOU know? You live in Jersey so you aren't a NY'er either I guess.

Before I answer this one, let's all inhale! (breathe in), then exhale! (breathe out). Just my way to save this thread from going to "Take It Outside". ;D

If we are going to go on the dance music angle Z-100 may play "something", but not enough. And for a station that is purely CHR, I could semi-understand that. Yeah, a "Z" may not necessarily work in other cities but for a city, such as New York, that is "rhythmic" they could do a bit more. But I do understand why, since "Z" has to "protect" 'KTU being both CC stations. A station like a Z-103.5 in Toronto would do wonders since that is perhaps the most dance-friendly CHR in North America. Toronto? It's NYC "North" with a diverse population.

I'm not going to get into this Texas "showdown" here only to say that I wish Billy The Kid the best of success here. Just as if a New Yorker landed a CHR job in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin or any other major Texas city, that he/she would be received with open arms.

Thank you.

New York is getting one of the best.

With so much negativity in the business, it's nice to see a positive story.

This "Kidd" is living a dream. I knew him when he was an intern in Detroit doing whatever it took to make a name for himself.

I know it's tough for so many, but don't take anything away from a guy like this that has earned his stripes.

You are absolutely right! And who would know better than you... "The Kidd's" mom ;D

Strange thoughts as Romeo is from Pittsburgh. Most of the morning show is from NY or NJ BTW. So which is it, you have to be from NY or you don't? Did Romeo learn for your "School of hard knocks"? So Elvis Duran who has lived and worked in NY for 20 years isn't as NY as Romeo? John Bell is on Z100 for 26 years. he doesn't sound like he is from the area? Just curious.
