z 107.9

they should change the name to

107.9 The beat The most hip-hop & R&B nothing other would change but the name

or Hot 107.9 Z sounds to CHRISH for a hip-hop station dont you agree with me ???

For those trying to pronounce CHRISH... no, it's not "Cherish" (nice name for an all love songs format) or "Christian" or "Christmas". He means C.H.R-ish.

I was wondering what CHRISH meant. So you are saying they should drop the name that is well established in favor of a different one just because it is used on CHR stations in other cities? Do you work for Clear Channel or the Bush Administration?

Isn't what 107.9 plays a form of CHR?

I mean, it is contemporary, they are hits, and it is on the radio, no?

Or does the race of the participants make it something else?

Nope. Don't agree with ya. And neither do the majority either. Nothing's wrong with their branding.

Yes, it's Rhythmic CHR.

So, since we have established that 107.9 *IS* CHR...what's the problem with their imaging and positioning name, original poster?

Technically, they are Urban. That IS how they are classified...

Is our original poster the "Mike1" who used to post about every single move of WXRK/92.3?

When did he figure out that the FM radio spectrum goes all the way down to 107.9?

:D

Radio One wanted to call it Kiss 107.9 right from the start. And did. Patterned after their own WKYS-FM in DC, and the WENZ calls were planned to change as well. But CC issued a cease-and-desist against them, as CC already installed THEIR Kiss trademark (from KIIS/LA; Gannett tm'ed it originally) on stations in Dayton and Cincy. Plus they flipped WZLE to "Kiss 104.9." So, until Radio One relented, we had dueling "Kiss"es at 104.9 and 107.9...

It was only convinent for Radio One to drop "Kiss" after being forced to; and applying the "Z" from the WENZ calls. So it has been ever since (and quite frankly; it outlived the "End" format, and then some...)

That's pretty much it.

It has survived, and pretty well in fact: now #3 in PM drive, P18-34.

Makes me wonder why the old Power 108 WPHR didn't work back when WGCL had just switched to NCX & 92Q,WRQC Cleveland Heights was the only other CHR Cleveland had...1990-'91ish. Power 108 was a killer format! Being burnt for years on alternative & classic rock must've starved the area out for good hot CHR & Urban hit radio.

Or, as J Niice once said.......
Roach 107.9-Wanna raid our prize closet? We need it.
The station with the biggest ****......roaches. Z 107.9.
You got beat? We'll squash it. Just like our roaches. Z 107.9.
Other stations bugging you? Z 107.9. We'll bug you better.

Carlos:

107.9's signal is pretty lousy in much of the western end of the metro. If you live in Lakewood west to Lorain County, or southwest down toward Strongsville and Medina, their signal sucks. Around the heavily populated areas of Parma-Parma Heights-Brecksville, they get clobbered with interference from all of the big Cleveland FMs who broadcast from the towers which are right there. Ride up I-77 near Rockside and try to get them clearly. Forget it. That's why Power 108, The End, and other 107.9 formats which needed full market coverage failed.

107.9 never had a winning format until Urban.

That's because the high-density black areas of East Cleveland, Warrensville Heights, Beford, etc are all within 107.9's strong signal coverage.
They don't need a full-market signal to get big numbers with an urban format. Hell, WJMO on 1490 AM used to be one of the top rated stations
at night with their black format......and they had 250 watts are were not heard clearly beyond about 8 miles after sundown! But the whole audience was right in their back yard, so it didn't matter.
