Z 93

I was the PD hired for Z-93 to make the switch to Classic Rock in January of 89. It was a WILD, WILD time. Over 300 calls the first day. Wore out the receptionist who got both views of the change from listeners. I gotta tell ya, it was the most fun I ever had putting on a new format for a classic station.

Do you remember that "Situation" by Yaz was broke by Power?

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, whoa whoa whoa!!!!

You mean... that song actually DID play there at one point? Who thought I'd discover this - IN 2010?!? There should be a chart somewhere that contains a list of top hits stations (SPECIFIC STATIONS, not just stations in general) played back in the late 80's to early 90's. The reason I wantit to be specific is because just having the top hits list does not tell you WHICH places & stations those songs were or WERE NOT played in...
WTH? "Situation" came out in 1982. Warm 100/99.7 didn't flip to Power 99 until 1986. Math doesn't work.

I'd have to check my old Power 99 tapes, but I believe they added it to regular rotation in the summer/fall of 1987. I remember hearing it at a middle school dance (dj'ed by an outside dj rather than by someone at the school) around that time. I knew it didn't sound "new", but it was new to me.

At some point, I think Power 99 was also spinning Uptown's "I'm Losing You", another "old but new" song to my pre-teen ears.

Sounds like the situation (pun not intended) with "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers, which came out in 1988 but didn't chart until 5 years later (reaching #3), thanks to its inclusion in Benny & Joon.

"Situation" by Yaz/Yazoo also gained some unexpected recurrency on 80s playlists a few years back thanks to its inclusion in a Honda Odyssey commercial, where grown-up GenXers get berated by their former 1980s selves for buying a minivan.
