Just listened. Was that John Young (The Treasure Island, Toys for Tots) voicing the promos / contests?

Indeed it was. John was the PD there 1978-86. And he was amazing.

Looks like we posted at the same time. :)

To bad he is not there now, honestly this station is about the worst mess I have ever heard............

John Young was one of the first voices I remember hearing as a young kid in the late 1970's.
He and the rest of that station are pure talent and electricity. We will never see (or hear) radio like that again. If anyone has any cassette recordings of Z-93 or other great Atlanta radio, I'd love to meet with you.

I have a collection of fully restored high end cassette decks, including a Nakamichi Dragon and RX-505, and I'd love to digitize and upload these to YouTube in highest quality (as possible with their compression), so we can continue to enjoy and remember the great memories of Atlanta radio, because we will most likely never hear radio like that again, at least until corporate ownership ends.

You do realize that if he was still here (on Z93), he'd be playing songs off the CHR chart IN 2012 (not the CHR chart from 1978 lol)

And Atlanta needs more stations playing "Call Me Maybe".

Brent, I totally agree with you that z-93 was a great station. But…have you listened to Dave in the past few weeks? I think they’re starting to sound good again. The music is coming together and the on-air staff is showing their personality a bit more…just enough to be engaging. No huge shifts, seems like small tweaks that to me, are making a difference.

This is still a long way from what it could be, still really sounds the same to me. At least the River is showing some subtle change, not enough to really be classified as what they want to try to be, either classic rock, or classic hits, of which they both use for id's.?????

I was able to get 97-1 The River this morning here in Greenville. They sounded pretty good, but I think they could add some more classic hits "variety" without ruining the flow of the station. Listen to WROR in Boston....they are a rock leaning classic hits station, but mix in some pop material and it makes the station more interesting to listen to.

I suggested what I think would work for 92.9 on another thread (basically mirror a "young" classic hits station like CBS's own WOCL in Orlando). I wonder why CBS went with the "Dave" format and name instead of the Jack-FM brand/variety hits format that they were really in to during the mid-2000s? Regardless of what they play, that "Dave" moniker is just weird.

River is still a mess, 92,9 is a complete and utter mess, just do not get it. Radio does not care what people want today, and cater to minorities.

Thought I'd comment, I wonder if these changes will hurt it. When 92.9 was playing a lot of 80s music and doing 80s weekends last month, they actually inched up to a 1.9 in PPM. I know I've said that before, but I wonder if the music tweaks this month will hurt them?

I hope they drop below a 1 share, then maybe someone will wake up and make a greatly needed change.

What don't you get? It's called ALTERNATIVE/ROCK and CLASSIC ROCK - people listen to it all over the country ::)

Maybe I should start up 10 threads trying to get V103 to flip formats, just because I don't like Urban, and I don't "get it"

I do not get you, frankly.............. :p

OMG, I was listening to the John Young Toy-For-Tots promo and realized I went to that very concert. What great memories!!! I drove my 1968 RS/SS Camaro to the show. It was a very cold night. On the way home my heater went out and my date and I froze driving 60 miles. Little did I know that night that I would spend the next 32 years in radio. Z-93 what a great inspiration. I just wish I had the good sense to keep the car!

I had the privilege to hear John Young on WMAK (Nashville) before he came to Atlanta. He was just as good there too. I was surprised that 98.5 or 94.1 never tried to pick him up even if just for voice overs, when he was finish at Z93.

Has anyone spoke with John Young lately?
Last time we spoke he was moving to Nashville - that was several years ago (I think.....)
And yes....Z93, during John Young's tenure, was quite a station.
And back in those days radio was still a fun way to make a few doughnuts.......

Everywhere but the south, seemingly....there aren't too many Alt. stations in the southeast. I think the loud/thrashing/screaming rock is more popular in most areas...I know it is here in SC
