Z100 1995-1996

Does anyone remember who the mid-day and night hosts (7pm-10pm) were on Z100 back in late 1995/early 1996? I wanna say a guy named Kane did middays before Lisa Taylor came in, but i'm not sure.

I do remember that that was the transitional period between Z-100's original glory days as a CHR and their current hurrah as a CHR... you know, when they were sprinkling in alternative music under the tutelage of Tom Poleman... But in fairness, he (and Z) have certainly made up for that.

I think the person who'd best be fit to directly answer your question would be Vince Santarelli.

Z100's Modern Rock lean was very innovative at the time, especially in 93-94. In fact, in 1994 it was voted as radio station of the year by the readers of Rolling Stone.
They were one of the top rated stations in NYC in 94 peaking at around a 4.5 share, but the Alterna-Pop sound faced a LOT of newfound competition:
1) Q-104.3 went Active Rock in late 1993
2) 95.5 PLJ moved more towards Modern A/C in the mid 90s
3) 92.3 K-Rock went full-blown Modern Rock in 96
4) Dance/Pop 103.5 KTU shot straight to the top of the NYC ratings within a couple of months of launching
5) 105.1's short lived Modern A/C format in 96-97

Tom Poleman was NOT the PD during that era-it was still Steve Kingston, who Scott Shannon brought to the station in 1989 from WPGC/Washington. Kingston and the Pop/Alt format moved to KRock in Feb 2006, the same time that Poleman, Paul Cubby Bryant and Sharon Dustar came up from KRBE/Houston to restore the station to a straight Pop/CHR format.

The midday jock before Lisa Taylor was Human Numan, who jocked at the Z from the spring of 1992 to the spring of 1996. He came to the station from WZOU/Boston.

Poleman and Cubby (believe Ryan Chase was also part of that exodus to Z100)... left KRBE Houston in 1996 not 2006.

Nights was Chio the Hitman, who came to the Z around the same time as Human Numan from San Diego's Q106

Chio was great! Didn't know he was there back in 96' though. Also I was trying to remember, when Elvis Duran come to Z100?

In late 95 and early 96, the mid day jock at Z-100 was Human Numan. He left in January of 96 and was replaced by Freddie Vedder. The night jock at that time was Cane. He did 7 to 10 PM. Love Phones with Dr. Judith Kuriansky was on from 10 to midnight and then came Chris Jagger, who did midnight to 2 AM. Steve Kingston was the PD.

I think that he came in 1989 from Philadelphia (maybe he was from Eagle 106), then left in 1992 when most of the jocks were let go. I think he returned just prior to the Poleman crew in 1996. I remember hearing that Frankie Blue tried desperately to get him signed for the new 103.5 KTU in 1996, just before he rejoined the Z.

2) 95.5 PLJ moved more towards Modern A/C in the mid 90s

They did?! I don't recall 'PLJ having a modern lean, but I definitely remember WNEW-FM in '95 experimenting with a modern rock sound.

^I think Hot AC in general stole the Alternative sound from any CHRs (like Z100) that were experimenting with it at the time - in '94, PLJ was still playing Phil Collins/Richard Marx-type stuff, so Z100 could attract the Alt/Rock females, but by '96 PLJ jumped on the Alanis, Goo Goo Dolls, Dave Matthews bandwagon (along with most other HACs), leaving Z100 with much fewer Alt-leaning female listeners

Steve Kingston joined Z-100 in February, 1987.

There was also 107.1 WRGX "Today's Rock X-107" which was also full blown modern rock up until they went country.....Not what 92.7 was doing at the time since they were always changing their sound.....Were they called "The Island" then?

They were Modern Rock WDRE, "The Underground Network" in 94-95. "The Underground Network" had stations in Philadelphia, Little Rock, Memphis, Albany, and maybe a few other markets. At some point, the "network" fell apart and WDRE dropped the "Underground Network" branding, going back to calling themselves "WDRE". This incarnation was pretty short-lived since in 1996, they gave up on Modern Rock and went to Modern AC as WLIR "The Island".

PLJ didn't really lean modern until a little later in the decade, after the Buzz was gone and Z100 was already back to Pop. The Hot AC format as a whole did become more modern in 1996, playing more Alanis and less Elton John. PLJ still played a lot of music that wouldn't be considered "modern" in 1996 though.

The midday jock before LT was Feddy Vetter, aka Joe Tironi, aka Logan from My106 in Philly.

Poleman was originally hired to continue the alterna-pop direction at Z100, but took the station mainstream when that approach ran out of steam.

Chio was replaced by Kane in nights after Z had already morphed into its New Rock direction.

Steve Kingston came in from B104 Baltimore.
