Z100 30th anniversary?

I do remember the "flashback records" (that mostly flashed back about as far as the early-mid 1990s) on their 20th Anniversary weekend in early August 2003. However, they let their 25th Anniversary pass by without much (if any) notice in 2008. I suspect it'll be the same in August 2013.

Heritage is great when it's with a "classic" format where it can be looked back upon without stretching too far afield. But with CHR, it's not always a good idea to remind your younger audience how old you are - when you are older than a good portion of them!

KDWB in Minneapolis had a big 30th anniversary weekend back in '89 or so. Dedicated the entire weekend to lots of old jocks, airchecks, period music, etc. But as a big Clear Channel CHR station nowadays, their most recent anniversary (50th) festivities were moved over to their sister station, oldies KOOL 108 (if I recall). KOOL 108s listeners probably listened to KDWB way back when, for a typical KDWB listener today, it just reminds them that they're listening to the same radio station their grandparents listened to when they were kids. It's the same reason MTV doesn't acknowledge their birthdays anymore.

Well since it's not until August 1st, you're not gonna hear much about it right now.
If they do anything at all, it should be on Friday, August 2, not August 1st, and going into a 30th Birthday Weekend.

Z-100 is not the same station it was and has changed it's image and owners over the years. Elvis could incorporate it in his show since he's been there for so long, but, what about the Shannon and original Zoo? It will sound too much like a competitive promotion for the Scott and Todd Show.

A nice romantic thought, but this is reality and the competition for the new and younger ears is too fierce for Market #1.

Most of Z100's current listeners have no idea (nor care) about the station's "heritage". Better to stay focused on the here and now when you are a CHR.

I doubt they will do much of anything -- maybe a passing mention.

The date looms closer and still no idea if any mention will even be made. I emailed them an the response I got was to check to z100.com for any possible festivities.

Probably half of Z's audience (at least) is younger than the station itself. Think of it that way.

The actual Hit Music Survey # 1 was dated Aug 2, 1983 and had How Do You Keep The Music Playing by James Ingram and Patty Austin at #7 and Is This The End by the New Edition at#15. Other than that, the songs were pretty similar though at different positions.

Maybe CBS-FM will celebrate it! They can have a modern radio greats weekend, bring back Jack Da Wack and other DJ's. This is the heart of the new CBS-FM listener age group.

Let me put it this way: this weekend I picked up my girlfriend's two cousins, ages 15 and 11, who were going to stay with us for the weekend. On the drive back to our place, I put on Z100 for them to listen to (and for them to sing along to every word of every song they played). At one point, a song that came out late last year came on and the 15 year old loudly declared "This is so old! If it came out more than 3 months ago, it's old!" She's pretty much right in their listener wheelhouse. I think it's safe to say that their intended audience doesn't care about how old the station is, only that it plays whatever is popular right this second.

That's a great idea. Why not bring back Scott Shannon (from True Oldies Channel and "Scott & Todd"), Russ Britton, and the rest of the Z100 "Morning Zoo" team from the past as well as Mr. Leonard. In addition, maybe other "Radio Greats" outside of Z100 are Al Bandiero from WQHT's "Hot 103/Hot 97", and the regulars are Broadway Bill Lee, Pat St. John and Dan Taylor. And maybe they should add Steven E Roy from WLTW's "Lite-FM" and Valerie Smalldone, she was formerly of "Lite-FM" as well as some former "Lite-FM" jocks to be part of the new "Radio Greats" reunion are JJ Kennedy and a few others as well as former CBS-FM jocks like Holly Levis, Mickey Dolenz, Mike McCann and Mike Fitzgerald. That would be a great lineup for the new "Radio Greats" reunion weekend.

Theres a cool 12 page writeup about Z in this weeks 8/03 billboard magazine.

It said they actually fell to 18th place in the mid 90s during the ugly alternative era but the top 40 comeback brought them back to life.
