Z100 Slogan Change

Anybody know why Z100 dropped the #1 from its slogan? They used to be New York's #1 Hit Music Station, and now they are New York's Hit Music Station.

That question was posed a couple of weeks ago on the Dentist board, and while there were many replies, most of it resorted to bickering, which was amazingly not deleted. Amazingly with all the radio pros on that site, the question wasn't answered.

My only guess is that it has to do with a definition of the word "hit." Lite FM can be considered a hit music station as well...the songs it plays are/were all quite popular. Just a guess, though it would be an odd reason to change the slogan, since most people would associate hit music with the type of stuff Z100 plays, and there isn't another CHR in town.

I'm suprised they didn't change it to "The Hit Music Space" since many CC CHRs are doing this all of the sudden.

Maybe it's because nobody gives a rat's a*** who's #1 in anything anymore.

There's been research done to support the fact that "pound on your chest" imaging and positioning is not effective anymore. It's like having a friend that is full of themselves, you only can handle them telling you how great they are at something so many times before your tired of hearing it.

Tell that to Hot 97 and Power 105. At one point they were trying to out-do themselves, I think when they were both fighting for the #1 spot in the Market...

Hot 97 - The "Official" #1 for Hip-Hop and R&B
Power 105 - "Certified" #1 for Hip-Hop and R&B

The guy who suggested the self-boasting liner is correct, depending on format.
Hip-Hop is of course all about boasting, but clearly many Xer's and Y loathe that
kind of chest thumping as someone called it. That's why reverse-marketing is often
used i.e. "we suck less than the other station" etc. Power 105 should do a liner
with rappers get shot and killed.

why do they even bother having a slogan anymore? a station that big, it really seems unnessesary when you think about it.

So should Coke and Pepsi drop their slogans? No....The answer about dropping the chest pumping because of research among their demo is accurate...plus, when you ARE the only it music station in NY, why bother implying you are #1. Of course you are. And for the record, that exact answer was given on "the dentist board". It was buried by all the postings by the dance fans and the conspiracy theorists.

I've always agreed that the #1 chest-pumping wasn't necessary, especially when a station like Z100 is the only game in town. There's still other stations even outside of music that have such slogans however. Isn't WINS still "the most listened to station in the nation"?

Also, no need for anyone to get snippity here. It amazes me how quickly and easily that happens out of nowhere on these boards.

What is Coke's slogan? I haven't heard "Can't beat the real thing" in years... And Pepsi? I have NO CLUE what their slogan is. Do they even have one? My point is that people buy Pepsi because they like Pepsi and the overall image Pepsi's advertising presents them with. By the same token, people listen to Z100 because they like the music and the overall station image they are presented with... Not because they are the "Hit Music Station," #1 or otherwise.

I made myself curious and Google'd Coke and Pepsi slogans since 1990.

COKE:
1990 Can't Beat the Real Thing
1993 Always Coca-Cola / Taste it all
1994 Play Red Hot Summer
1995 Play Red Hot Summer Again
1996 Enjoy
2001 Life is Good

PEPSI:
1991: "Gotta Have It".
1995: "Nothing Else is a Pepsi".
1997: "GeneratioNext".
1999: "Ask for More"/"The Joy of Cola".
2003: "It's the Cola"/"Dare for More".
2007: "More Happy"

How many of these mean anything at all to you as a consumer?

Of course, Coke's in 2007 is "The Coke Side Of Life." (A "Life of Brian" ad campaign would be feasible...)

And who can forget the DIET Pepsi early 90's ad campaign with the late Ray Charles: "You Got The Right One Baby!" (Uh Huh!) Anyone recall their ad campaign leading up to the Super Bowl - the one with the infamous Scott Norwood "wide right" - where Charles would come on and "tell us" who would win the game? What a bunch of bunk!

yea, I was waiting for them to rename themselves New York's Hit Music Channel, since so many radio stations want that "TV Channel" feeling, and their sister station Y100 is Miami's Hit Music Channel.

what other "hit" or CHR station is here in NYC?... They don't need to say #1 they're like the only game in town... They are NY'S HIT MUSIC STATION... no need to imply there are others...

They're the only Arbitron designated CHR station, but I think thy threw the #1 in there to take a swipe at WPLJ since they too call themselves a "hit music station" even though they really are not.

I think you're right. When WPLJ came up with the "New York's Hit Music Station" slogan, Z100 answered with "New York's #1 Hit Music Station". WPLJ then stopped using that slogan altogether and Z100 stuck with theirs for years.....until now. I guess they figured that enough time had passed that people had forgotten that spat.

Another slogan Z-100 should consider is "New York's Pop Music Channel!"

You could try to make a case that WQHT is also a "hit music station"
