Z103.5 The Beat of Halifax

Does anyone have any info on when The New Z103.5 The Beat of Halifax is going on the air? Their website is up and is only saying soon. This will be the first station in Atlantic Canada to aim at the the under 25 demographic, while not trying to please the 16-54 crowd, which is impossible on stations like:
C100.1 http://www.c100fm.com/
Q104.3 http://www.q104.ca/
Kool 96dot5 http://www.planetkool.ca/
Halifax has been dying to get a urban/hiphop station with such a huge college population. The Halifax market has about a half a million people in the listening area, with approx. 5-10% black population.

I understand the station is planning on launching in October, but since they were supposed to be up already I'm not sure. I'm not sure they even have studios actually picked out yet. I'd heard something about Maritime Centre??
The population of the HRM is a little over 350K. I'm not sure the city has been dying to get an urban/hip hop station. If it was such an obvious glaring hole, somebody would've already taken it. Besides, they're not getting an urban/hip hop station. They're getting the Evanov brand of pop/rock/hip hop/dance. I'm sure they'll do alright but Q and C100 will remain strong in the market. Oh, and they're not going to be called The Beat. They'll be z1035 just like Toronto.

Thanks for the info, I have heard rumours but nothing solid.
And sorry dying might have been too stong of word. I am from Halifax and know that the Halifax radio market is underserved without any competition in the youth radio format. C100 "Today's Best Music" which is the closes thing to hit radio in halifax, is hardly that when they play Great Big Sea, along with many 80's hits.
The Halifax population is actually 400k (latest census) but a listening audience in nearby areas like Truro, add another 100k roughly. An Evanov's group wasn't the only one vying for this format, Rogers, Astral, MBS, Halifax JAMZ 95.7 Inc., East Coast Broadcasting Inc. were all after that format in the latest CRTC hearings in Halifax.
The website calls it "The Beat of Halifax" so it may just be referred to as Z103.5, however Toronto's tagline is "The Hit music station" which is dance music geared toward late 20's males. So I hardly believe its going to follow that format, which would basically kill it before it hit the air in Halifax. It isn't going to be an "All Urban Station" and will probably end up more top 40/ rythmic, but it will be the first new commercial station in Halifax in 15 years or more, since 96.5 sun fm hit the air.

Cant wait to hear the second wave of this z103 station...
(online since i am in niagara falls, ny).

If they don't stream, or constantly have problems..
(they are a Evanov station)..can some one air check and
scope some breaks/liners/ID's. I really dont need the
music, i am more interested in the imaging and creative
top of the hour ID's and clever/and 'local' halifax liners..
ONLY Time i am going to be interested in the mix is when...
it is a 'dj-danny-d' signing on the station -
with him mixing (or some one just as sweet : ) mixing live...or,
a live-2-aire, and it totally sizzles.. !!!
-
NOW, i have a question..only for true cdn's..that can answer this
one.. !! i know some peep's that read this board, like myself ,
are American's..which is also cool, and some, if not all live
near a border-town..so we are familiar with some (can-con for one)
and other canadian-specific regulations..but i don't want
[much] speculation, some is okay : ) well..here is my ?????
-
Can Evanov *Legally* as allowed by law..simucast(?sp) z-103.5 fm
with one source..being in toronto?
-
Footnote:
( *NOW, in this hypothetical, they have a halifax studio, where they can,
at any time, upon request, make the halifax studio go "Live") but...
until the CRTC asks them too..they use the toronto "feed" to
serve the 103.5 in halifax...
-
and, to make it sound.."official.."

"..chris biggs, on z103-dot-5-Canada's favourite top 40 station..."

<>
can this happen ?
-
sidenote:
I know they can..'get around' this..by pulling a page out of 'energy-FM'...
and, generate playlists and fax it over..so it will ultimately be the
same station..but, respectively, each station, will independently be
playing the songs, and live DJ's will place their own input on
intro's/outro's...but to actually do the above...network a station,
many miles away..that 'just so happen' to be on the same frequencey ????

I am also from Halifax, I worked in the city for a number of years but am now in another market. I'm not sure where you're getting this info about CHR/Rhythmic from but if you read the Evanov press release they state very clearly what the format will be. Normally I'd take that with a grain of salt but given the fact that this is a format hybrid that the Evanovs seem sold on, it's only natural that's what they'll do in Halifax. As for "The Beat of Halifax", I doubt they'll give away all of thier positioning pre-launch. That would be too much of a gift to the other players in the market. If you know anything about the company you'll know they like to do things as economically as possible, and doubling up on thier ID's (while having to pay nominally more to put them on another market) is a great way to save.
As for the out of market listeners, that's a non-issue. It doesn't matter if every teen from Truro tunes in, it's not going to show up in the ratings. But that's neither here nor there. I think they'll do alright, but C100 doesn't need to be quaking in thier boots. Evanov is targetting the youth, which C100 has never pretended to do. They're a Hot AC and have healthy adult numbers. Those listeners aren't going to be going anywhere. MBS, incidentally, was going for an AC, not CHR.

Yes it can happen, however, part of the Evanov licence for Halifax guarantees a certain percentage of locally produced content.

I know it's on thier website, the misspelled Avril "Lavinge" is also on there. I'm glad they corrected the misspelled Halifax that was originally on there. If you're going to take that website so literally, how do you figure Green Day and Simple Plan and Tiesto figure into a rhythmic CHR? I was, at one point, involved in talking to them directly about joining the team there. I know what they've got planned.

I'm going to agree with that, and further argue that they may not want to run into some of the troubles that Energy radio ran into. <P ID="signature">______________

CHR-Rythmic/POP is got to be what their leaning towards (with more Rythmic then POP) rather than CHR-Rythmic/Dance that they play in Toronto. Toronto's huge diverse population can handle a station that plays a lot of Dance, since they have so many other AC stations, Halifax does not have the market to support a Dance leaning station since they only have one station that plays any current AC or CHR (C100). The Z103.5 brand may be marketed the same but the music will be different. TvRadioWorld has already got CKHZ listed as CHR-Rythmic, while C100 is listed as CHR-POP. (I know it is not an accurate format info source) http://www.tvradioworld.com/region1/ns/radio.asp?m=hal

Even if it becomes a Hit Station (Only CHR-POP to accomodate the CANCON 40%), this would make more since esecially if you compare it to similar size markets like London or Kitchener which have more than one station playing current CHR or AC.

Also Halifax listeners (even the younger ones) will be turned off by a station that does not have local on-air voices and trys to utilize live Toronto content, except for countdown's etc. Evanov's Group will be changing the halifax station before they know it if they try an exact clone of Toronto's Z103.5.
