Yow! Rick must be cleaning house. Any ideas for who or what he's looking for in airstaff?

Roxy and the Misfitz aren't on the site anymore.

Z90 pretty much built its rep and ratings with "unknowns" and people literally off the streets who often had little, if any, radio experience. Rick will be - or should be - looking for attitude, spirit and street sense, not misfit posers and pretenders. Z90 certainly doesn't need a "name" morning show and in fact it really did best when the focus was on the music and not trying to create yet another crew of morning clowns.

Rick did not - as some have claimed - create or even originate Jammin Z90, he was not the first PD - although he did start very soon after it went on the air - and the station did not reach its peak until well after he left, but he did work his butt off promoting it and getting it started with basically no budget. He really was a guerilla fighter and helped Z90 become a lean mean operation and it'll be interesting to see if he can recapture that spirit 15 years later.

Maybe ...

... they all went to work for La Nueva Ses-Noventa.

Here's what I "think" will happen. Empahsis on "think" or "guess..."

Z90 will move more mainstream, and position itself against Channel 933. They will probably pick up any airstaff that were cut from Star that have not yet been picked up (I'll let everyone do the math on that). And I would not be at all suprised to see some former Q106 staffers re-appear there either, as Z90 tries to gain back a heritage feel.

Magic will become a mainstream AC or Hot AC. I expect more of the "Freestyle" or "80's Funk" music that Star had been playing during drive time and on Weekends. This ones a little tricky, becuae it could go either way, but I don't think the so-called "Old School" label will be on the 925 banner for much longer.

91X will stay mostly intact, with a few changes in airstaff, and I wouldn't be suprised to see Chris Cantore or some other names from the past return.

And, (I may be way off on this), I wouldn't be surpised to see all three of these stations somehow united with BCA and Mighty1090 at some point in the future, but I'm not sure if that would be allowed by the JD or the FCC.

Just guesses, who knows for sure...

The former Q-106 staffers are all middle-aged has beens :)

Z90's heritage, if you will, is not at all aligned with what they did at Star or even at Q-106. In the very early days of Jammin' Z90, Victor did have a strong desire to beat Q-106 and "Jeff and Jerk", as he called them, but Z90's strength was in NOT doing the kind of upbeat smiley-DJ hit radio heard on Star and Q106 in which mostly white middle class jocks tried to act like they were hip. During the first few years of Z90's existence Victor kept bringing in one team of morning show "actors" after another, until we convinced him that the people listening to Z90 did not need or want that kind of BS. Q106 at the time of course had J&J, but they WERE the station: after they went off the air at 9 or 10, the numbers really dropped off. Unless you are going for a big draw morning show, jocks do not matter: there are no stars in music radio after 10 AM. We proved that at Z90: take some kid with the right attitude and give him a good music rotation and he (or she) will do as well - or better - than some high-paid "veteran."

I will give credit to one exception at Z-90: Cha Cha. She was part of the Z90 air staff when it was still a 3rd rate rock station and she really came into her own when the station went urban as Jammin' Z90. I don't know though that she was actually that much of a radio veteran before Jammin' Z90, and certainly no one n town knew who she was then, but with the urban format she became as close to being a midday radio star as you can get.

Bob, I completely agree with you.
Z90 created a sound all it's own (that 933 stole, right down to the mic selection).

Z90 didn't try to be like every other Top40 station around the country. Instead, they taylored their sound to what the local market and audience called for. And, it worked!

I would point out that Jo jo Kincaid can still belt out his stuff, but he's probably better for oldies or 80's music. And how many of those are there?

My guess is that Rick will slam this ting towards an Hispanic core, with an emmphasis on researching against Hispanics, and trying to blow 98.9 out of the water. Rememeber, he comes from an Hispanic hip ho station in SA.

Before all the Calvary Chapel stuff took over 90.3 here in LA, I used to listen to Z90 all the time back in the early to mid 90s.

I remember they had one of the best live mix shows on Friday nights. I've still got several airchecks in fact, I think it was the Friday Night Street Party or something like that. Regardless, the DJs were killing it in the mix, much better than what LA was offering at the time, IMHO. Anyone remember this show, or the DJ?

One of the battles I fought at Z90 was to skew it to skew it towards Hispanics: at the time the only urban station in town was totally geared toward African Americans and Z90 started out like that, but if you look at the population numbers, well...

There really wasn't any overt favoritism (or exclusion) but simple stuff like having a morning jock called "Mark en la Manana," who had been "Mark in the Dark" when he did evenings.

Yup, I remember the show. If memory serves, one of the mixers was "Crazy Jay Nelson."<P ID="signature">______________

He was the Z90 MD and because the PD spent all day hiding in her office, he did a lot of the PD job too. And yes he was crazy :)
