I have to laugh @ some of the earlier posts. You seriously don't think behind closed doors that MMX isn't a bit concerned over this? For people looking for good "pop" music, this new station is great. Mix has been rolling along with pretty much zero competition over there and now that has changed. My only concern with the new station is telling people it actually exists....something they must be planning on doing now rather than prior to the flip. Outside of us radio geeks and regular Z listeners, I don't think the metro was really buzzing about what was going on on the 92.9 freq.
Now if this were a kid's station, you've got built-in word of mouth advertising at the wonderful place called school. Adults don't go around telling other adults about "this great new station" they found, so I hope Mainline is planning a big marketing blitz to let the area KNOW they are there. Once people find them, I don't know why - from what I've heard so far - they won't like them.
They ARE playing titles that you haven't heard for awhile, and SO FAR, I've heard pretty much only big hits. I think they will be just fine, and yes WILL cause issues for MMX, IF: They market the crap out of the station; They spend a little bit of cash to put a nice, solid, concise, tight, yet "fun" sounding, morning show on the air (who actually sound prepared when they open the mic); They only play the HITS! Look, you've got about 40 years of music to choose from...play the hits and not the marginal crap, and the station can have a big library AND sound very good.
That said, the things I don't like so far are: The name of the station, the Jet sound effects, and the imaging presentation. Will the imaging matter to the average listener? Not sure, but the imaging is pretty weak.
So far, concerning the music only, I'm liking what I'm hearing. Previous posts talk about "train wrecks" with the music. Come on....what an OVER USED PHRASE in this business! Sure, if you were looking at it analytically on a piece if paper, or if you really listening with a critical "radio" mentality (which is NOT how 'regular' people listen), you might not choose to play two certain titles back to back. But you have to be able to step outside and look in, and ask yourself how the LISTENER will hear your music mix.
