Z93 stunting!

Welcome to the world of Clear Channel, they are only out for theirselves and only care about one thing, being greedy! You can see that in the markets own general managers comments. He could care less about the listener.

BINGO! That would be the prime playlist.

HOT 102.9 - DAYTON'S HOTTEST HIT'S AND HIP HOP

Basically design it to follow B96 in Chicago. The station could very easily become an overnight success story and burn Channel into the ground.

JT- Until The End Of Time
Flo Rida- Low
Alicia Keys- No One
Natasha Bedingfield - Love Like This
Fabolous- Baby Don't Go
Fergie- Fergalicious
Chris Brown- Kiss, Kiss
Elliott Yamin - Wait For You
Gorilla Zoe- Hood Figga
Timbaland- Apologize
Puff Daddy- I'll Be Missing You
Natalie- Goin' Crazy
Trey Songz- Can't Help But Wait
Kanye West- Stronger
Rihanna- Umbrella

You might be able to get away with Avril's GIRLFRIEND and possibly during the daytime Maroon Five's WAKEUP CALL.

Thats the direction Wild was when they were pulling 9 and 10 shares, and now under their management they are all over the map.

As for staffing the newly reconfigured mothership,

Monday-Friday:

6:00 to 10:00AM - RUSS PAR in the morning
10:00 to 2:00PM - ANGEL O'SHEA
2:00 to 7:00PM - SCOTTY and GINA in the afternoon
7:00 to 12:00AM - PARTYMAN

Very nice! Maybe drop Parr and get Kidd Kraddick. I wonder if that could happen.

ATTN: KY

More school marm finger wagging is needed at the Dayton Daily News website. Disgruntled former Z listeners there - that you'll find in need of a good KYmedia talking down. Be sure to throw around a few dollar signs, protest about how hard it is to see these "people" that just don't understand your business, and do a little corporate radio name dropping. For awhile, they might ignore your obvious biases too, and even be fooled into thinking you're a Dayton radio pro.

Channel and CC will ride this to the end. Z-93 used to have their top of the hour ID state something to the effect of "Live local DJ's, local contest winners, obviously NOT a Clear Channel station". This was probably no doubt a happy day at CC Dayton. I think the most tactful thing I ever heard from a competitor was when Dom Testa in Denver on Mix 100 welcomed Jamie and Danny morning show listeners to their show the day after Clear Channels 95.7 KISS in Denver switched to a failed Mega format (currently 95.7 in Denver is a struggling Party format). He explained that radio stations change formats will little or no notice, and often times the jocks you heard yesterday, are gone by the time the format changes, thats radio. He wasn't like ha ha ha, Kiss failed, Mix 100 rules, but very tactful.

If I were at 94.5 I would say something to the effect that formats change, radio happens, thanks for checking us out.

I heard them do it earlier live at the remote. They even had a former Z93 DJ. They're showing the love to Z93. No bashing except on the website. "The One And Only 945"

I heard the countdown. Its now the new Y 92.9. I heard the last 2 hours of the countdown and thought it was kind of cool. I left the radio on for the last 1/2 hour of it and I heard the 30 second countdown and had to laugh. It said 30, 29, 28. 20 20 27, 26, 20 20 20 25 and so on. I think it kept messing up in the 20's. What was the music called that was playing in the background of the countdown? I heard that on so many stations when they do contests and stuff like that. First song played was "Fly like an Eagle" by Steve Miller Band. They said they will play ANYTHING just like Mix 1077 on the weekends. Will they have live DJ's ever again?

NO NO NO it was WGTZ, Eaton, Dayton and Springfield ALIVE"

Who can forget their clever legal id:

"WGTZ, Eaton Dayton Alive!"
[/quote]

You got that right. I used to listen to Z93 but they were becoming just too much rap crap for me to listen to. My mom (who is now 74) loved Dr. Dave and Wild Bill. She won 5 contests off those guys. WMMX is just right for me. Mom now listens to that Jazz station. WDSJ or something like that. She said Z93 was just noise to her in the last 5 years. She also likes WMMX on the weekends and 92.5 but can hardly pick it up here in Richmond IN now. A lot of the stations from Cincy we can't pick up. I love WEBN but can't pick it up. Some Indy station bleeds all over it.

[quote author=kentuckymedia link=topic=84542.msg631558#msg631558

WGTZ listeners were getting older and flowing to WMMX
WMMX listeners stick with them for much longer than your average Hot AC

Please, PLEASE listen to kentuckymedia and Jason Roberts...They both understand this business. Jason is a 30+ year radio vet, so he knows his stuff.
I understand everyone is devestated that Z-93 is dead. You must realize you are letting your emotions get in the way of your business sense. No one was a bigger Z-93 fan than yours truly...Believe me, I put a ton of blood, sweat and tears into putting up a Tribute Site to honor those that built Z into the empire it was. Now, and I am not disrespecting anyone here or any of the former Z staffers(Whom I liked personally as well), but THE BRAND Z-93 has been dead for years. It was a severely damaged brand. It also had a stigma that it was unable to overcome with a certain element of the audience. Z had been in the ratings toilet 12+ for awhile(Sorry, I don't have any other figures to go by)...The last time that station cracked a 5 was late 2000 I believe if my memory serves me right. At the time, Randy James wanted Z to compete more with Mix. Then Radio One bought Z in 2001 and Randy left, and since then Z has floundered aimlessly trying not to hurt the almighty one known as Radio One's "baby" Hot 102.9, which in turn took some of Z's audience, and eventually all of U-92's audience when Radio One put poor Ronita Saunders out of business. Anyhow, since that 5 share in late 2000, Z had even sunk into the low 2s at times...Pathetic for a station with a huge signal like that.
Now, here comes Mainline in May of this year and sees a struggling station like 92.9...Their only option, research or not, was to flip it.
Now, let's ask ourselves: If we owned that monster 92.9 signal, would we want it to make tons of cash and challenge WMMX to get off their keysters(Let's face it, 'MMX has been really coasting lately)and freshen things up,or would we let Z-93 bleed money and just fade away? That choice is easy.
I like "Fly 929" so far...I've heard stuff I haven't heard on the radio in awhile(Like "Urgent" by Foreigner). So far I haven't heard any repetition...That will be important for long periods of listening in the present and near future...
Will Pop CHR return to Dayton anytime soon...My bet is not at least on Channel and their wimpy signal...It won't do the format justice and we all know CC won't put any $$$ into hiring an actual airstaff to sell the hell out of the station. Yes, a Rhythmic CHR and a Pop CHR can dominate in the same market...Just look at Power 107 and WNCI in Columbus for a good example.

Oh and if anybody misses Rick Dees you can listen online to G1013.com They play that guy on Sundays 8am to Noon.

http://g1013.com/

There music is so bad if you listen to it at other times. Wish they would change their format.

I wonder how many people will really miss Rick Dees locally? His "MOViN'" station out in California is in the ratings toilet...Also at least AT40 is still on Channel Sundays 8 to Noon...I think.
Also saw on the DDN website postings that some guy wants to protest Z's format flip. Come on dude...get a life. I wonder if it would pan out like the "Pilot Part 2" episode of "WKRP In Cincinnati" where the old people in the lobby "protested" to have their Beautiful Music format restored(All six of them). Remember folks, if you hate what local radio is offering, NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO LISTEN! Just turn the radio dial, or put in a CD! Or tune in a station from Cincy...Like 94.9 The Sound. Remember they're still a new station as well...They flipped on this date one year ago. Another option is Q102...Or tune in WNCI online...Or Mix 97.1 online. Mix 97.1 is a CHR-leaning Hot AC. Anyhow, I loved Z too...However life goes on!
Also, all the people posting over there...If they loved Z so much, they must not have had the all-important Arbitron diary...Ratings(Courtesy of the listeners AND THE STATIONS THEY CHOOSE TO LISTEN TO) and ad rates/sales are what make the heart beat in radio. Please remember that this is a business, not an emotional attachment, at harsh as that may sound.
I'm not trying to get anyone's hopes up, however...remember that B94 in Pittsburgh, a legendary CHR, just returned to the airwaves after a lengthy absence...Could it happen with Z-93? Who knows?
Let's also not forget the JACK FM disaster at WCBS-FM/NYC. After a two-year absence and listener dissatisfaction with JACK, JACK was moved to their HD2 subchannel and the previous format, Oldies, returned...With many tweaks however. Let's not forget that 92.3 K-Rock also came back to NYC this year after the other CBS Radio disaster known as Free FM ran its course.

I have to laugh @ some of the earlier posts. You seriously don't think behind closed doors that MMX isn't a bit concerned over this? For people looking for good "pop" music, this new station is great. Mix has been rolling along with pretty much zero competition over there and now that has changed. My only concern with the new station is telling people it actually exists....something they must be planning on doing now rather than prior to the flip. Outside of us radio geeks and regular Z listeners, I don't think the metro was really buzzing about what was going on on the 92.9 freq.

Now if this were a kid's station, you've got built-in word of mouth advertising at the wonderful place called school. Adults don't go around telling other adults about "this great new station" they found, so I hope Mainline is planning a big marketing blitz to let the area KNOW they are there. Once people find them, I don't know why - from what I've heard so far - they won't like them.

They ARE playing titles that you haven't heard for awhile, and SO FAR, I've heard pretty much only big hits. I think they will be just fine, and yes WILL cause issues for MMX, IF: They market the crap out of the station; They spend a little bit of cash to put a nice, solid, concise, tight, yet "fun" sounding, morning show on the air (who actually sound prepared when they open the mic); They only play the HITS! Look, you've got about 40 years of music to choose from...play the hits and not the marginal crap, and the station can have a big library AND sound very good.

That said, the things I don't like so far are: The name of the station, the Jet sound effects, and the imaging presentation. Will the imaging matter to the average listener? Not sure, but the imaging is pretty weak.

So far, concerning the music only, I'm liking what I'm hearing. Previous posts talk about "train wrecks" with the music. Come on....what an OVER USED PHRASE in this business! Sure, if you were looking at it analytically on a piece if paper, or if you really listening with a critical "radio" mentality (which is NOT how 'regular' people listen), you might not choose to play two certain titles back to back. But you have to be able to step outside and look in, and ask yourself how the LISTENER will hear your music mix.

Marketweis is right on the money here...'MMX has to be at least a little worried.
Also, is it just me, or does FLY sound a lot more "punchy" than it did when it was Z? I've noticed this on not only my home stereo, but also my car stereo as well...I LOVE IT!

I just think Dayton needs its own Mainstream/Top 40 Station. Channel 945 is more for Adult, while Z-93 aimed for the Kids and Teens. The whole idea of rythmic, well doesn't go so well for me.

Considering that Jason has a pony in the race, his bias is obvious. As for KY? With every post he's made it more and more clear that it's not about the listener, but only about anything that might give his CC hatred a bit more leverage.

Funny you mention that. I kinda thought last night when I really cranked it up a bit in my vehicle, that the audio had a little extra something to it. Perhaps somebody did a bit of tweaking over there. Technically, it sounds very nice...well, the music that is.....NOT some of the imaging. ;D

I think you have it backwards. Channel is more for the teens. Look at the playlist!

Or get XM or Sirius. If it wasn't for this board and the DDN, I wouldn't have known there was a change at all.

Random question - did they get the name from the Albany, NY station or the unfortunately past alt rocker in Wichita?

Supposedly it came from Dayton's great place in thory of aviation.
