It died because Bonneville owned it! Having Bonneville owning Z-95.7 was a bad thing considering how conservative they are and how they would knee-jerk the programming around, effectively not allowing it a chance to grow. Z-95.7's sister station in Washington, DC, Z-104, had similar problems and bowed out of the CHR format when Clear Channel launched a full-powered CHR in that market in 2001 (Z-104's signal was a pair of rimshots and had problems covering the entire DC market).
Also, having 2 Rhythmic CHRs in the market for so long (KMEL and KYLD) didn't help matters either.
It was a dance/pop station in an era where there wasn't enough material to sustain the station for more than a couple years - Le Click, La Bouche, Real McCoy, Gina G., etc.., and even Hanson and the Spice Girls all lost popularity within a year or two from their first release
I agree that Bonneville mishandled it, and Z104/Washington, but I think it had less to do with being conservative, and more to do with the fact that by 1998, the most popular CHR music was either Urban or Alternative/Pop (not dance), and Bonneville IMO was pretty stubborn about keeping their CHRs dance-based - in 2009-2012, I think the station would've done fine
This was definite flashback to 1997 radio for me, but not in San Fran, I was in Panama City.
We had this jingle package on top 40 Island 106/WILN, always thought it sounded excellent.
The v/o guy on this Z95.7 audio I'm pretty sure is the late Keith Eubanks
who we were using down the hall on rock 97X/WYYX.
Pretty sure K-Hits/Tulsa also used the same jingle package in 1997
I also remember Z95.7 had a show called "Total Request Zone" which was a spinoff of the once popular MTV show, "Total Request Live." I know it was a night show hosted by a DJ, who went by the name "Stick." Do you know what he's doing today?
Ummm......99.7 have been CHR since 2008, 12 years today as of 5/16/2020
92.7 have been CHR since 2009, 11 years today as of 5/16/2020
94.9 have been CHR/Top 40 since 2015, (evolved from CHR-Rhythmic) 5 years today as of 5/16/2020

What if another company owned the Z back in the early 2000's? I was in a dentist office the moment Z95.7 changed formats to 95.7 The Drive, which was a classic hits station. That format also failed!
