Z97.9/Monterey Flipping to Rhythmic?

Like a radio geek, my domain account with my registrar is setup to notify when people register domains with words like "thebeat, wild, z, q, jammin, mix, sunny" etc... Well I logged in to my account yesterday and saw a few new domains on the list, so I checked their WhoIs info. Much to my surprise, Buckley Radio Monterey registered Jammin979.com back in late October.

Any changes yet? I'm not in the listening area. I'm also not one to start a baseless radio rumor, but I do find this interesting.

Yep Jammin' 97.9 CHR/Rythmic. Tommy Del Rio will program out of Fresno, it will be kind of a clone of KSEQ. APD/Morning Man Freeze got let go yesterday. This is about the 5th attempt to go after KDON in 5 years, the previous 4 not sucessful, never anything over a 2 share. We'll see what happens, but will not be easy for them even though Tommy has the expierience.

Could be interesting. Z97.9 was getting about a share and a half as CHR in a very Hispanic market. Another Rhythmic, done right, could do very well. Wasn't it Tommy that launched Q97 and had steady growth until they eventually passed up B95? Q97 lost that ground during Tommy's hiatus to San Diego and Sacramento. I'm excited to see what can be done. Monterey can use some shaking up!

Just my opinion.

True, but it will be very difficult while your programing a station when your not based out of the actual market and are fully occupied with your "baby" at the same time. It's all about vibe, and the streets...it will be very hard to feel the people while your in an office in Visalia. Tommy has been quite successful becuase he models everything after KYLD in San Francisco and what Michael Martin did a few years back, almost all of KDON's entire staff came from KYLD, and actually worked under Martin. Also signal strength is an issue when your in Monterey, and can't get the station clear in Monterey.

it looks like its already rhythmic according to their last songs played on yes.com

Hmm.. Another station going after KDON?.. Should be interesting to see.. 97.9 has had a few different formats over the past couple of years so hopefully this one will stick.. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.. Looks like KMBY (former Santa Cruz X 103.9) will be moved out of the picture as it looks like their Rap/Rock Hybrid format has been slow to take off.. Wonder what Mapleton will do.. Only time will tell..

Yea that 97.9 signal has a curse on it. 5th format in 4 years. KDON over the years has progressed to what it has always needed to be and that's why the attempts have failed. By monitoring the spins so far and comparing, KYZZ is simply just a clone of KDON with a smaller signal and the same talent from when it was Pop. We'll see what happens when all the kinks are worked out. Dr. Dave/Angie Martinez combo voice over, both those VO's are branded in the market with 2 of those failing attempts in the past LOL, not that that will make or break the station but just a side note. =)
