Zakk Tyler update?

Well, he's been around for a few months... I'm still not feeling it. I try to listen here and there, but find myself going to TRG, Giant Brian (ugh), or my CDs. I still miss having Orf and Denzil during my morning drive, but my good friend Mike Wheeler will make sure I never get that back. I still can't believe one of the biggest shows Zakk's had was the bacon eating contest.

A few days ago I was cruising the stations and TRG were doing the News Jog, 961 was playing Beastie Boys, and Zakk was speaking with an interior designer about redecorating his place. Uhhhhh... okay.

Any thoughts on the Zakk Tyler show on Dave? Have you grown to enjoy the show? Are you anticipating the surprise return of Nino "Grease" Manelli, like I am? *wink wink*

An unremarkable failure.

The most attention generated for this time slot was when Jimmy Baron handled the show for a week.

I seem to remember Rick Caffey saying Zakk Attakk would be spending more time outside the studio than inside. When was the last time Zakk did an appearance? I think Sarah Palin was still field dressing a Moose & protecting Alaska from the Russians when Zakk last met the public.

Rick, babe, make the call, I will be there in 1/2 hour. I will get a winning morning show on the air in 3-6 weeks. I will continue the musical direction that Margot has started. I will add specialty shows to make Sunday really special. I will give Zakk a bus ticket back to Pittsburgh. I will keep Jane on in the morning. 929 Radio Atlanta, it has a ring to it.

Do you really think that Caffey gives a Crappy about Dave? He has no clue about the programming. V is his baby. Wonder if Dan Mason listened while he was in town.

My guess is Rick Caffey cares a great deal about DAVE. I'm sure he would like a second 47 million dollar biller as a twin for V.
Let's wait until PPM results come out before we do the death chant for Zakk and DAVE.
They may not have to call Niel Millman after all.........

But, Tom, how likely is it the PPM is going to make that much difference for Zakk? I mean, granted the PPM has been good for rock stations, but it ain't fairy dust. Zakk finishes routinely between 15-20th in 25-54 adults. Even if he gets a small bump with the meters it's not like he's all of a sudden gonna jump to top 10, and I'm guessing that's what Caffey wants out of that station, ultimately.

Yeah, Tom. I love your posts, but it seems like everyone thinks that the PPM is going to be the savior. That's all I hear about. Here's how I feel, and maybe I'm in the minority, but, if management/staff/PD/on-airs hopes of the station turning around is a new ratings tool, then you are sunk already.

The answer should be better talent, better content, better imaging, not "we are going to get a bump from the PPM's". Not to mention, look at the data. Granted the PPM's skew away from urban and toward rock as being favorable, but it's not like VEE is going to go from a ten share to a four share and Dave is going from a two and a half share to a six share. You are honestly talking about maybe a share or so change, and I think that is being generous. Which still leaves Dave in a tough spot. Case in point, in the new ratings, Zakk is sitting at a cool 22 place... Unless I'm mistaken, that is a few trends in the 20's. Not good. Also, I saw, at one point a few weeks ago, their TSL was 26th. 26th? I might be wrong, but I think that is dead last.

And all the while, Mara pulls another top 10 in this new book and every other daypart is 16th or lower. Also, Zakk is reaping the benefits of a shifted time slot. His 22nd place is in the 6-10 slot, but he's on 5-9. So, guess what, in his numbers he gets credit for an hour of Mara's Top 10 she pulls every book.

PPM isn't going to be the Tooth Fairy and slip some rating under Dave's pillow.

I love Dave, and I'm not death chanting for it, but AM drive can't keep ringing up rankings in the 20s.

I would be interested to hear Kabrich's predictions for Atlanta PPM.
At this juncture I don't think anyone wants to do anything until some initial PPM guidance comes in.
Radio One, in Philly, supposedly took a new jock off the air after a couple of weeks because of PPM results. It may be that quite a few jocks will have to "re-invent" their whole schtick when they start seeing PPM data -
We may be suprised at who is a "tune out" and who is a "listen thru." I'm just saying let's wait until we determine exactly where the problems are....with DAVE and all the rest.
I'm keenly interested in The Morning Mess and how they fare with PPM. Caddy and Dallas, Steve and Vickie, Frank and Wanda.....all these guys do a lot of talking - I wonder who actually stays tuned in and who wanders away down the dial.
Too bad we can't measure listening reaction - is it passive or is it causing sweaty excitement. Do certain songs cause sexual arousal in female listeners.....does excessive audio processing/distortion cause facial-muscular tension? Does listening to the Bert show create an abnormal desire to lick salt blocks - and yes......how does that affect Q-100?
The next step for Arbitron....measuring listening EXPERIENCE. The "effectiveness" of audio. Just because you're listening doesn't necessarily mean you're assimilating what you're listening to......
