Zone Post Howard

I really think The Zone should just realize the alternative rock format belongs at 103.9 after Howard runs out this year. They have an amazing oppurtunity to tap into a format that is no where to be found in Phoenix :

Urban

They have many syndicated personalities to choose from:

am drive - Tom Joyner, Russ Parr, Doug Banks

pm drive - Wendy Williams, Michael Baisden

I believe if the format was done right, with the right personalities, you would see pretty decent ratings. Of course you are not going to get top dog ratings since this is a niche format but I believe there are many people craving a good Urban and/or Urban AC station in town. 101.5 just has to realize what a great oppurtunity they have right in front of their eyes.

Of the two, Alt. should be on 103.9 - they do it much better anyway. Besides Urban/Urban AC there is also AAA to consider. There are reasons for and against doing any of these three formats:

Reasons for Urban: Denver, a market with a similar African American population has Urban AC, owned by Infinity, and it does alright in the ratings.

Reasons against Urban: Obviously an Urban or Urban AC format primarily targets African Americans. The African American ethnic composition for Phoenix is 5.10%. Compare that with other markets of similar size, also markets without the pure Urban format : Denver 11.12%, Seattle 8.44%, Minneapolis 17.99%, San Diego 7.86%. You can state that Caucasians and Latinos would support Urban, but their support would not be enough for the format to succeed, which is the reason why no one is doing the format right now.

Reasons for AAA: Smooth Jazz does extraordinarily well in Phx and this would be a good leading indicator for AAA. AAA does very very well in Mpls, Denver and Seattle.

Reasons against AAA: When analyzing the prospects for the AAA format a key indicator is median income. At $30,000, the median income for Maricopa County is well below that of Denver ($43,000), Minneapolis ($45,000) and San Diego ($48,000).

There are many other factors to consider but these are some that jumped out at me.

Chill....I win, I'm the first to say it!!!! Not really, I just wanted to get it out of the way

Actuall you might be on to something. If you so some "specialized" chill programming with either a AAA or a Urban Ac I bet the ratings would be great.

YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE.

BUT IF YOU'RE GONNA DO 'CHILL', IT'S GOTTA BE ALL OR NOTHING; WHICH WAS THE PROBLEM WITH CD101 IN NEW YORK. THEY TRIED TO DO 'CHILL' WHILE KEEPING THE KENNY G TYPES IN THE MIX. ..KENNY G IS SO NOT 'CHILL'.

IT'S AS IF K-LITE MADE THE SWITCH TO THE PEAK, BUT KEPT THE BACK STREET BOYS AND CHRISTINA AGUILARA IN THEIR MIX. ..IT WOULDN'T WORK.

I AM HEARING MORE CHILL ON THE KYOT, BUT NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
