The F.C.C. has approved, on a one year experimental basis, a system that makes it possible to provide highly localized content. Stations would be permitted to originate very local programming and commercials for up to 3 minutes per hour, utilizing as many as 25 boosters.
Most of the major radio groups (with the notable exception of EMF) have been opposed to this concept. Among their concerns have been the potential for interference, and lower advertising rates. Advocates have stated it could offer access to small advertisers that could not afford full market signals, and provide some content that could better serve local areas.
