"ZOOMER 740" competition anyone???

In a nutshell, I think ZOOMER Radio (CHWO) needs some competition.

If it's as lucrative as I think it is, I'm not sure why another area broadcaster hasn't tried to grab a piece of them. The problem I have with 740, is that their programming isn't as consistent as I'd prefer. Here on the "other" side of the border, we have 2 national satellite-fed services providing "standards" to mostly lower power AM stations in small to medium markets. Then like here, some markets have a Zoomer-type broadcaster, programming locally. As of late, both Music of Your Life and America's Best Music (from Dial Global) have added alot more 70's soft-pop (Fleetwood Mac, Spinners, etc) ... and a few 80's too, while still playing Sinatra, Bennet, Mathis, & Nat Cole among others.

So for the few times of the year while visiting family and listening to 740, it annoys me that part of their day seemed to be spent with a talk format. Then during other music hours it wasn't uncommon to hear songs that I can only describe as obscure. Then they seem to have theme hours... only 60's... or perhaps Irish music? --- or some other specialized theme to an individual or something of that sort. Point being, that I couldn't just turn it on, and hear what I'm accustomed to hearing, consistent to the format that I'm assuming it is. They aren't (thank "you know who") the CBC! They don't need to be ALL things to ALL people! They aren't the only broadcaster in a 50 mile range. I know standards isn't the most sellable format, and possibly only somewhat successful due to 740's enormous signal.

So the question again..... why someone else hasn't set-up shop with the same (standards) format, done with at least 90% consistency (with CanCon of course) is beyond me. At least give the dominant force a run for their $$$.

Message to western NY; It's a darn shame the format has been completely killed there.

RBW:

740 has compitition within the city itself on Newmarket licensed CKDX "Jewel" 88.5.

OK :) I'll try to check that out next time. Although I usually spend the bulk of my visits in the Niagara region.

***Jewel 88five changed their format a bit to be known simply as "Lite hits" instead of the standards format they were maintaining up until just recently.***

I'm not sure why they would do that when there's no more 1050, and (to agree) AM 740 deserves some competition.

Add to that the very fact that FM radio in Canada is more free these days to play more hits/classic hits/oldies than in previous years.

***I take that back! YIKES! When the heck did they become "Lite and Refreshing"? What will they be NEXT WEEK??!!!! GEEEZ!!!

Well maybe they WILL have some now--- since WHLD 1270 has just switched to standards ;D

WHLD has a go0d enough daytime signal to be a factor as well. I lived in the King/Dufferin area and listened to WHLD when they had Spanish language programming back in the late 90's. I never had any reception problems at home or driving around.

Lucky for AM 740, the WHLD signal does not reach all that well into the Toronto market.
Lucky again for AM 740, WHLD is NOT at the Toronto CNE!
For some unknown reason, AM 740 seems to be absent for 2010! (CNE is Toronto's Canadian National Exhibition)
They've always been there in previous years. (shared with Classical 96 in recent years) I wonder what changed their mind? ???

I like Friday nights best on CFZM and love the obscurities, even with the mellow mixed in.

This world doesn't need any more "lite" anything!

My favorite format to laugh at was one we had here in Chicago; "Continuous Soft Hits".

How about a super grunge format, " Hits that make made parents nervous through the decades!"
Stuff like Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, fast Elvis songs, Duane Eddy, Link Wray, The Animals, The Troggs, The Ramones, The Cramps, Throbbing Gristle, The Dickies, the Sex Pistols. There a whole world of people who DON'T WANT to be mellow or "lite".

Songs for the juvenile delinquent within all of us. Rebellious songs. Songs that make the mellow blush.

No mellow hits, All The Time is what this world needs.

The very first song to open the new fomat would be " Does your ***** Do The Dog?" by the Cramps.

Well, you see...if they're working, they have MONEY to spend on the ads they hear on the radio!
Therefore, targeting the workplace is always a major plus, and your formatics unfortunantly end up being the afterthought!

A recent poster said WHLD gets into the Toronto area pretty well. Radio-Locator has Toronto well within the "distant" range. And given their 5 kw output, I should think TO would would be within taget. No co-channel interference either!!

It perhaps depends on where in Toronto you are.
I seem to pick up Joy 1250 on 1270 somehow.
(AM 1250 broadcasts out of Oakville Ontario.)
??? I guess I need to buy a new radio! 8)

Tom! You've removed your mask!

No mask, I'm just complex. I'm an all-grown up, responsible adult who's still in touch with his inner juvenile delinquent!
Let's dig out the Caruso 12" 78s and the Uncle Josh records!

Hi. I just found this Toronto board. Never thought to look in International.

I totally agree with RBW who started this discussion. I’ve loved this station since it first came on and listen all day in the office. Except when that talk show comes on. I’m sure he’s a nice man and helps lots of people, I just wish he’d do it someplace else. I want my music!!!!
And sometimes the music gets crazy with those themes RBW talked about. It’s like radio was long ago when there would be an hour of this then an hour of that. I wish they would rein it in and stick to their basic songs without getting too old or too young or too far off track. This is why competition would be good for them and for us listeners. They’d be forced into focusing on the listeners they claim to be broadcasting to instead of trying to please all kinds of different groups of people for an hour.
Another thing…. no matter how hard they keep hammering away at the slogan I’d never call myself a Zoomer. I’m in the right age group. But that’s just silly.

Don’t tear down Dale Goldhawk. He provides a valuable service to seniors. What would we do without him?

Well now, it is to my understanding that AM 640 is going to get OUT of the sports business soon.
With that possibility on the table, I say move Dale over to 640.

Let's see what ratings AM 740 gets with music vs his talk show on 640.
While they're at it, 640 should also pick up some of the great shows CFRB tossed away.
First show that comes to mind? The Motts!

I honestly do not know if 640 will ever desire to target an older crowd, but I do know they will have to do something soon...

(**note: AM 640 Toronto was only a 1/2 sports station anyway.)
