In a nutshell, I think ZOOMER Radio (CHWO) needs some competition.
If it's as lucrative as I think it is, I'm not sure why another area broadcaster hasn't tried to grab a piece of them. The problem I have with 740, is that their programming isn't as consistent as I'd prefer. Here on the "other" side of the border, we have 2 national satellite-fed services providing "standards" to mostly lower power AM stations in small to medium markets. Then like here, some markets have a Zoomer-type broadcaster, programming locally. As of late, both Music of Your Life and America's Best Music (from Dial Global) have added alot more 70's soft-pop (Fleetwood Mac, Spinners, etc) ... and a few 80's too, while still playing Sinatra, Bennet, Mathis, & Nat Cole among others.
So for the few times of the year while visiting family and listening to 740, it annoys me that part of their day seemed to be spent with a talk format. Then during other music hours it wasn't uncommon to hear songs that I can only describe as obscure. Then they seem to have theme hours... only 60's... or perhaps Irish music? --- or some other specialized theme to an individual or something of that sort. Point being, that I couldn't just turn it on, and hear what I'm accustomed to hearing, consistent to the format that I'm assuming it is. They aren't (thank "you know who") the CBC! They don't need to be ALL things to ALL people! They aren't the only broadcaster in a 50 mile range. I know standards isn't the most sellable format, and possibly only somewhat successful due to 740's enormous signal.
So the question again..... why someone else hasn't set-up shop with the same (standards) format, done with at least 90% consistency (with CanCon of course) is beyond me. At least give the dominant force a run for their $$$.
Message to western NY; It's a darn shame the format has been completely killed there.
