Zwerling Puts KSCO, KOMY Up For Sale

Spent a few minutes with my old pal Michael Zwerling at the Legends Lunch on Thursday, and mentioned (as I always do) that I still want to be him when I grow up. And, as he always does, he replied "No you don't."

This morning, MZ announced that he is putting KSCO/1080 and KOMY/1340 up for sale. His family has owned KSCO -- which I believe is the most powerful coastside AM station between SF and LA -- for nearly two decades, and they've had pea-shooter KOMY for about ten years.

Oddly enough, KSCO celebrated its sixtieth birthday on Friday, according to MZ...

I worked for KSCO back in 1988 when it was owned by Fuller-Jeffrey Broadcasting. The FM used to be KLRS at 99.1 . I think Michael bought KSCO in 1990 or 1991.

I might be wrong, but I believe that KSCO was a Standards station up until 1988 then they dropped the calls in favor of its FM Station, KLRS "Colors 99.1" and a simulcast? Then in late 1989, they switched its calls back to KSCO and dropped its simulcast of 99.1 in favor of its present News/Talk format? Also when 99.1 was KLRS Colors 99.1, wasn't that format kind of a NAC/Smooth Jazz? And before 99.1 became KLRS, I think it was KSCO-FM and it was a Easy Listening/Beautiful Music format? And in 1990, Fuller Jeffrey sold the AM station to Michael Zwerling and the FM station to Viacom (who then did a simulcast of San Francisco station, KDBK-98.9) and it became "Double 99 FM" KDBQ.

Yes KSCO had a standards format through the Transtar Satellite Service. I would actually load the carts and liners of the DJ's in the 1960's automation system between songs at KLRS. KSCO had a live morning DJ named Joe Thomas and had local news as well. Yes, KSCO went to KLRS-AM for a short time but then went back to KSCO thank goodness. I still have the flyer from that period.

KLRS was more of a New Age station mixed with what is now called "Smooth Jazz" although that term was not used then. KLRS played more space and electronic music, something that not heard on the Smooth Jazz stations today.

Yes up until March 10, 1987, KSCO-FM was a easy listening station and then went to KLRS on that day until 1990 when it was sold to Viacom and then went to KDBK/KDBQ.

1991, so that is about 16 years he has owned KSCO. How much is Michael asking for the stations? I know he has talked many times about selling the stations in the past so I am woundering is he is asking a realalistic price?

He should be on the air, hosting "The Saturday Special," this morning starting at 10 a.m.

Perhaps you might call him up and ask!

(You can also listen online at www.ksco.com)

Mickey Luckoff could probably buy KSCO with his pocket change...

It was a pit stop for me back in the late 80's in between one of my radio gigs, was it KDON AM? KWAV? KSJO? One of those in betweens i did a few fill in shifts at KLRS. So that's where I knew Michael! Hm-m-m.....He had a great little investment there in Santa Cruz near the waters...Lucky guy. Wished I had the dough to buy it......I'd hire all the great colleagues I have worked with and make it an incredible station...and you know what? I'd be the program director that everyone wished they would've had in their career.....positive, supportive and encouraging! Where is that PD these days?

Where, indeed? Too damned few and far between, I can tell ya THAT much! And even though I'm not in the "Colleagues (you) have worked with" category, Trish, my aircheck and resume would be the first you'd get...before the deal even closed...

It was a great station back in 1987-1988 when I worked there and at KLRS. KSCO was upstairs and KLRS was in the basement. When I did my air shirt at KLRS I had to run upstairs to KSCO and switch power from 10,000 watts to 5,000 at sunset. Lots of memories!

So, you changed clothes to go on the air, huh? Sounds pretty upscale! ;D
Now, come on...you knew I wouldn't let that one go by!

Ah yes, the days of changing modes manually...'cept in my case, it was also "on" and "off" when I worked at a daytimer...memories, indeed!
