11~Ninety's Vida Segunda?

Contrary to what the Arizona Socialist Republic reported, KNUV did NOT go dark on 7/31. They're alive and running network programming hoy en Espanol. They're also airing local commercials and doing the legal ID in Ingles (something KMVP can't quite seem to master).

Nurse Jeff and I suspect Mayor Flash Gordon will sleep better knowing this valued community resource is still kickin' out those Cinco kw's during the day. We're not resting too well after learning those elotes we bought from a street vendor are served with room temperature mayo. YIKES!

Having once worked at the ol' 1190 back in its KRDS CCM-format days lo, those many years ago, I would hate to see the old gal go dark. So here's my plan for newly-minted Talk 1990, KNTV "The Native." We'll format this so only people who are Arizona natives will understand it.

6-10 AM - "Morning Dew" with Dewey Hopper. Mind-bending dicsussions of the "Dewey Point" and weather for Phoenix and the Valley, including Higley and Curry's Corner, but NOT Elfrida or Many Farms...

10 AM - 2 PM - "Up Close with Close" - Bill Close hosts four hours but speaks so slowly you only get two hours worth of conversation. Via ISDN from his manse in Payson. Heavy emphasis on women's issues such as co-anchor's bra sizes and comfortable kitchen flooring for those bare feet.

2-6 PM - "A Guy Named Bruce" - In keeping with Valley tradition that every radio station must have someone named Bruce on staff, former Gov. Bruce Babbitt will regale us with afternoons filled with stammering and discussions of the Colorado River Water Compact. Wife Hattie ("Hattie B.") will do traffic on-scene from light rail trains.

6 - 10PM - "Bruce After Dark" - Hey, if one Bruce is gold, having TWO Bruces is platinum. Bruce Kelley makes his long-awaited return to Valley airwaves. Every night Bruce will call Steve Goddard at home to ask him if his refrigerator is running.

Overnights: "Skywave Theatre" - Every night, "The Native" will plug in the web stream of KFI Los Angeles and broadcast it "as is" on our station so radio geeks can pretend they're listening to exotic radio from our neighbors to the west.

Weekends: 48 hours of nothing but old tapes of 1970s L.A. Dodger games as heard on KTAR. This will be our ratings juggernaut.

I'm available for PD duties immediately and will only ask for the same salary Jonathon Brandmeier received from the original KZZP (adjusted for inflation.)

Nurse Jeff and I are intrigued with your programming plans for The Native. However, because we are consultants and bound to screw up good ideas, we'd like to suggest you consider a contest: Guess when the new Light Rail will run over the first person? We're sure Pppppreston Westmoreland is available and the grand prize can be furnished by Howie World. Whadda think? If you like it as much as we do, be sure to ask about our weekend nighttime program: Can you hear us where you are?

Will he bring us right up to date on the news?
And for the title, did you consider "Close Encounters"? ;D

How about an old KaRDS airstaff reunion?
Buster2, Johnny Collins, Michael Dixon...

Morning dew is great, lets just hope that Grant Woods doesn't sit in.

Morning Wood, probably not a good idea. ;D

I'm all for a KRDS reunion.

I would have to look up Preston Scott, "Ranger" Keith Passon ("I've been to Heber"), Mike Adams, Malcom R. Pavey and the rest of the crew. The most notable of the old KRDS CCM gang from 1985-86 or so (when I was there) is Korva Coleman, who later found a long gig as midday anchor at NPR.

Is Mike Adams still alive????

His morning show (if it's the same guy) was where I got my start... doing voices and stuff... he was friggin old THEN (1993).

He was PD and Morning guy... nice enough guy... burnt out beyond belief though...

But why did the brains behind KNUV change their mind and keep the station on the air? Did their broker tell 'em a prospective buyer might want to drive that nighttime signal? Would the FCC want the license back if they couldn't keep it on the air? How do the guys who own the land the towers sit on feel about a new tenant, or the land's highest and best use? And should I send Nurse Jeff searching records to see what kind of pre-sunrise authorization 11~Ninety has?

KNUV, 5000 watts directional day, 250 watts directional night

....add another 150w to the night authorization and you've got what's in their CP. Although the Nurse and I aren't sure what the extra 150w adds, except maybe it sounds better than 250w!

Looks like they may have finally shut down. They were off the air Wednesday & Thursday (I didn't check this morning).

Don't forget the traffic with H.G. Listiac.

Isn't Bill Heywood going to sit in on weekends? Right on the price, right on the corner, of north 7th Street and Highland.

Sadly, very sadly, neither Bill nor H.G. are still in the building. :(

Worth noting, since a 2008-vintage thread has been revived...

Their website does not list nighttime programming but they do have nighttime shows. It's all Radio Fórmula programming, so automated I think I even heard an XEDF ID on the station (they did also run a KNUV ID).

When this thread was made I was still in middle school and had only one year of Spanish under my belt!

When this thread was made, the Gremlin was worth $2.50 more than it is today. YIKES!
