103.7 KXZK Vail

...is presently on air and broadcasting the Ted Tucker music collection...commercial free, of course.
Hope it stays on and is not just another frequency test.

Is Ted Tucker a controversial figure in Tucson radio?

Not at all. He's just known for being a guy who is apparently wealthy enough to own radio frequencies in Pima and Pinal counties and playing commercial-free music from his own vast collection on them (other than 98.3 KCDX Vail/Tucson which carries a satellite oldies format).

BTW, 103.7 KXZK is off-air today.

Corrected the call letters above. KCDX is 103.1 Florence/Phoenix.

is 98.5 owned by the same guy? decent mix though kind of repetative if you listen for more than a day or two, goes ota at sundown.

Yes. I mis-IDed the frequency as 98.3. That's KRDX Vail/Tucson. Actually, they usually go dark an hour or two after sunset, as they have a solar-powered transmitter.

No he is not controversial as far as I know. He is more of an Arizona icon. His history is moving frequencies around to an eventual end of a signal closer to a major market. I would assume that was in the hopes that bigger companies would buy it, thus his payoff. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe he did that in the Phoenix/Flagstaff area?
IIRC the current 98.5 was 98.3 in Nogales Arizona? but moved to Vail at 98.5. Last I heard he is now trying to move 98.5 back to Nogales clearing the way for 103.7 in Vail. The way the business has changed I question whether this mindset works anymore. Nobody but maybe a small operator is buying sticks any more. Certainly the evil empires are not spending $$$ to acquire rim shots any longer. Can anyone confirm the game plan with 98.5 and 103.7?

Now, wouldn't *that* be a scoop! :D

So, scanning the band this morning from extreme NW Tucson (actually, more like extreme northern Marana...), the 103.7 signal was booming in on my Honda Civic radio, and until I heard an ID at :40, I really thought I had tuned into KCDX!

Good signal until the Thornydale/Ina intersection, then very sporadic. Sorry, if I've not stumbled onto it, but where is the xmtr for 103.7?

too bad he programs this one with a feed and not the vast library he as on the other stations, Tucson could use variety

Yes, but I'm sure he's getting quite the deal since his Sierra Vista<?> stick uses the same sat-fed programming.
