New To Seattle

New to Seattle Boards and Radio. Some observations from a new poster:

1. Not much change in Seattle radio ratings in last couple of years. Very stable 6a-7p 25-54 in Seattle in men and women demos. KISW top dog for men along with KZOK. KPLZ top dog for women with KQMV and KRWM in second.
KKWF is top country station but goes up and down. Very strong local Christian station in KCMS and AC station in KRWM especially in fall and Christmas.
very stable successful stations in Seattle!!!

2. Really good morning shows in Seattle. Bob Rivers, Danny B and BJ Shea really outperform their stations and win on the male side. Kent and Allen outperforms station and very strong on the female side, surprising strength with 18-34 women. Good CHR show on KQMV though underperforms station a bit. very stable successful morning shows in Seattle!!!

3. New Entercom KHTP and Clear Channel KYNW are only two changes this year in market that i see KYNW appears to be over after a one share start. KHTP launching well, but probably not a long-term format. Seen these before in other markets, make a splash for six months and then go away. Basically Burns movin ac brand. Didn't seattle do this once before with movin KQMV was it CHR from the start? not a ton of change for a market this size and not much room for new stations

4. Only two real openings in the market in formats. No AAA, i mean real AAA, like Cities Fm. No Pure Rock station that is music focused inbetween KISW and KZOK where you hear a lot of talk 6a-7p. Market is pretty full. Would think stations like KLCK, KBKS, KUBE, KCMQ, KNDD that seem troubled might look at these openings.

5. Too many news talk and sports stations i counted about 10. how does anyone here keep track? tough time for news talk right now but next election they might do better. lots to choose from if you like spoken word along with npr.

market is so strong that these boards are filled with talk about out of town frequencies, kokomo and tv. funny sometimes boring reading. Seattle radio is pretty cool from an outsider just comiing in compared to most top 30 markets. lots more good going on here than bad. Local radio folk should get out of town for a while and see what the real world is like.

random thoughts from reading these boards and listening in town. Nice to be in seattle.

Movin' was Rhythmic AC between the fall of KLSY (in 2006) and then around 2011 flipped to CHR. Welcome to the boards - there is some cool listening in Seattle. If you are closer to Canada, you might be able to get several stations from Vancouver or Victoria, BC, which are interesting to listen to (due to all the CANCOM rules of playing Canadian artists).

Hey nice observations! I do agree about your mention of the boring conversation aspect of this website.. That Meg Coyle chat I saw on a previous thread made me want to jump out of my second story window.

I apologize for being the user who is stirs up conversation on issues that don't involve radio stations that are actually located in Seattle :D

KBKS needs an overhall badly. They were a great station several years ago, but now they've gotten really boring, and the imaging isn't helping, even though it's actually not that bad.

KBKS plays "Blurred Lines" Robin Thicke and "Royals" by Lorde about 10 times a day...enough!

guruofradio, I think your comments are mostly spot on.

Seattle has always been an interesting radio market, mainly because when people get here they don't want to leave, unless they are told to.

As for the tv discussion, a close examination of this site will reveal a big tv discussion section, but you have to scroll way down to see it. Some markets are highlighted for this discussion, some are not. But because that section exists, it has become accepted that TV topics are OK, if your market doesn't have its own thread. Seattle is one of those that doesn't have its own thread, so you get that on the radio discussion side. A lot of posters don't get this, but this is why that happens. Thanks for your insights, nice to hear from an outsider, who hopefully will soon be an insider.

TV discussions are just fine here. Some people (like AQH.....) bicker about why "TV is on a RADIO forum, blah blah..." Well, because Seattle doesn't have a TV forum! And it's interesting to hear other's opinions about the news on 4, 5, 7 and 13.

KBKS does need an overhaul, but not sure to what since Clear Channel now owns it. If CBS still owned it, I'm sure it would be a little more competitive. Now that it's under the same roof as KUBE and (dare I say) NOW, it's as if it kinda cannibalizes a part of the cluster.

I think we've hit peak with the contemporary pop stations. I expect a few serious modifications if not outright flips by this time next year. KISW looks ripe for a new competitor.

I don't see KYNW lasting very long. It is nibbling too much off of KBKS. But what's it supposed to eat? KPLZ? Not with it's line-up (or signal.) A better move would be KKBW moving to 102.9. It's still a second rate signal (but far better than 104.9), but KISW doesn't have serious competition everywhere in the same general format - especially under the same roof.

On second thought "Seattle-Tacoma's Boob Based Active Rock"? Nah.....Scratch that.....Forget it.

It's far too early to call for KHTP. But with two established Rhythmic CHRs already, it had better be prepared for a bloody and uphill battle in an avalanche. Two's company and three's a crowd. If all three can survive in that same format, I will not only be impressed, I'll be amazed. But the way I see it, there will be one odd man out distantly trailing the other two. That's the way it's always been in any given format in Seattle with more than two stations in it.

Will there be any new older skewing formats on FM? Doubtful. But considering what's already here, it wouldn't necessarily be automatically a bad idea either. That is if they all haven't been cast off to the interwebs and satellite radio by now.

As far as AM goes, I don't see any miracles. And no one is sure if Sinclair will keep KOMO Radio/KVI/KPLZ. But should a spin off happen, things may REALLY get crazy depending on who buys them.

But time will tell. We'll see......

If I ever made enough money, I would LOVE to buy off KOMO 1000, KIRO 710, or KJR 950 and flip the station to golden oldies. A man in Saint Louis, MO did something of that sort. He built a station from the ground up, KZQZ 1430; its quite successful.

I suppose I should get through college before buying multi-million dollar radio stations...

KVI tried that a couple of years ago, got fewer listeners than people who think favorably of U.S. Congress.

"Bicker" -- that's funny.

If I recall...almost every time the market has had three of something VERY similar, only two end up surviving. Top-40 was KJR, KOL, KING ... KJR and KING survived. KAYO and KMPS survived country. As FM migration became strong, KYYX and KVI-F/KPLZ; and KUBE killed KYYX as Top 40 -- same demise for KHIT. Same with all the news stations...same with Rock, Classic Rock, etc. As I've said before, the "game" appears more about an ownership wanting to be able to check some format matrix like it's a product feature comparison ....and it's NOT "strategic" (except they seem to think so with regard to courting agency money).

If KZQZ is successful, it must be in sales because they don't show up in the St. Louis ratings, not even cume!

What is interesting about KZQZ, there really is no "business model". It's just a neat station which serves a loyal niche of listeners.

Someday I was ever able to buy a station, that is what I would like to do. Obviously you need to generate enough revenue to keep the lights on, but it would be very different as compared to how these big corporations conduct business. The station would serve to satisfy a niche of listeners, and not be out to please any demographic.

Call it ignorant in the world of business; but if I was ever in a position to do something like that, why not?

Also remember KVI went to a 60's based oldies format in the mid to late 80's, under the guidance of Scott Burton, then Mike Webb, then Sky Walker. Then KBSG came in on the FM and forced KVI out of the format.
