Daryl Parks OUT at WLW !!!!

Maybe WLW-700 is going to dump all their remaining local talk shows, replacing them with syndicated programs from Clear Channel-owned Premiere Networks (and since Premiere, as far as I know, doesn't have a national morning-drive talk show, maybe the syndicated Imus in AM drive), and perhaps some more paid programming on weekends.

Thus with an all-syndicated lineup, Daryl Parks' job wouldn't be needed

Not necessarily. Parks was the corporate N/T PD and reports say it was a "management restructuring" that cost him his job.

I doubt WLW will dump all their local talk shows. Look at their ratings.....#1 by a LONG SHOT!

It would not make sense for Clear Channel to dump local on WLW at all when 55KRC has all of the popular syndicated programming and their ratings have been dropping. The company has made these kind of changes for the last several years especially around the Holidays. After all, they are in debt and are putting their resources in IHeartRadio and is always looking to streamline management.

A few weeks ago Parks made a pretty outspoken blog on the WLW website. Not sure if anybody caught it as the station removed it pretty quickly. He said some negative things about the FCC plan to revitalize AM radio, basically saying it was a big joke. Maybe that didn't set to well with corporate?

I think he made himself somewhat "toxic". A liability. BTW, microbob, i think KRC has been going up a few ticks....

Actually, the post was up for at least a few days--maybe roughly a week (or even more). And, even when it was taken down, the comments remained for at least a bit. It was certainly long enough for most of the trade sites to notice; indeed, most of the coverage of his firing references that post.

I can't say whether it was indeed a cause of his dismissal; still, it was the first thing that crossed my mind.

Almost ten years ago, Darryl bought sweatshirts for the staff that had the logo and "2015" on them. He said that by 2015, we'd all be gone. His point was that the industry was going to change significantly. He knew he'd be included.

Parks is a radio guy's radio guy.

These big corporations haven't a clue.

Assuming it just CC's annual Holiday downsizing,* I can only guess that more cuts are on the way for CC employees nation wide. I had read somewhere that CC was going to do it in a more "spread out' manor hoping that the public wouldn't notice the hundreds of hard working folks that will have a pick slip under the Christmas tree or Hanukkah Menorah.

* After the Christmas commercials are sold and cut, it is usually slow for a could of months. From a strictly economic view point, this will give whoever is left time to learn how to do more tasks for the same pay. A lot of large businesses really do not care about employee moral. Even if CC was different, the large debt bomb coming up will take it toll on the employees.

While I don't like to see anyone lose a position especially after being there all of those years, I was never impressed with Daryl Parks. He had all kinds of opinions (some I basically agreed with), but when it came time to comment to the Enquirer on something connected with the station, he always seemed have "no comment". There is just so much that WLW could make better, but I'm not sure how much he had to do with that.

I think that had to do with how WLW has been promoted over the years. Maybe it's me, but I do not like how arrogant the station and most of the on air personalities sound.

The "Columbus Enquirer, Cincinnati Edition" and "A Ohio State University" weren't funny in the first place, and just got older over time. I actually agreed with a lot of his opinions as well.

I wasn't always crazy about some of the things Parks did with WLW....hiring Eddie & Tracy for afternoons being one of the worst imho....but this is a pretty raw deal if you ask me. That's business, which I get. But CC is pretty brutal and apparently one's reward for years of hard work and loyalty is dismissal right before the holidays. It's becoming an annual CC holiday tradition. If I were employed by them I'd be pretty nervous when this time of year rolls around.

That said, while I appreciate the fact that WLW isn't your typical stuffy sounding newstalk station, I think Parks may have lowered the bar a little too much. The "beer for breakfast crowd" approach, especially during afternoon drive, is pretty unappealing.

I was never critiqued better than by Darryl. He made excellent points without over-filling your head or leaving you feeling beat up. Always positive and useful. It was hard to get close to him or feel like you knew what he was really thinking, but an excellent coach.

Radio Ink Magazine has a copy of his post on their website.

They weren't bad. I liked Darryl a lot, both from the standpoint of raw talent and because of the tongue-in-cheek nature of his sense of humor. He was always fun to listen to and I liked his sensibilities when it came to entertainment.

But be careful when accepting any promotion at CC ... it usually means you're going to be next on the chopping block.

Well, they used to be arrogant and entertaining--That is acceptable. Arrogant and boring doesn't work though.

Conspiracy theories aside, I think the reason Darryl was let go is simple: Most of CC's talk stations are tanking in the ratings. Not really Darryl's fault since most of them are hostages to de-localization and satellite programming, but he is the VP of News/Talk and when your stations are tanking ........ you're on the chopping block.

As much as CC has cut local stations though, who in their right could blame him for the ratings debacle?
