This is not a fair comparison. First Hannity is on some inferior stations. For instance, you can't compare Dallas 50,000 watt Class I-A WBAP to Salem's KSKY (10 kw by day but only 700 watts after sunset... and some of Hannity's show airs after sunset in winter). You can't compare Chicago 50,000 watt Class I-A WLS to Salem's 5000 watt WIND. The worst comparison is in Detroit, where WJR is also a 50,000 watt Class I-A while Hannity is on Salem's 1000 watt WDTK.
Even in NYC, where the 50,000 watt signals for WABC and WOR are roughly on par, Hannity moved to a station he had never been on, while Savage stayed on a station he's been on for years. Savage's timeslot moved but not his address. And let's remember in LA and San Francisco, Clear Channel decided to move Rush and other syndicated hosts, including Hannity, to new stations with lesser signals. The idea was to make KFI and KKSF all-local during the day, putting Rush, Hannity, Beck, etc. on KTLK (now KEIB) and KNEW. Only in LA is Hannity on a better signal than Savage, although neither is on one that covers the entire market, 1150 vs. 790.
The Salem stations get such bad ratings that in many markets, Salem doesn't pay Arbitron to rate them. To advance the owners' Conservative Christian political agenda, Salem operates the Talk stations as a break-even enterprise, while the paid religion stations are the ones that make money. OK, you may ask what made Hannity insist he wasn't going to be on Cumulus stations anymore? In markets where there's no Clear Channel Talk station, it forces Hannity to go on inferior stations.
Politico didn't take into account the quality of the signal or the fact that Hannity moved to a new address while Savage is staying on the same stations he's been airing on for years, since Cumulus became his syndicator. I'm no fan of either host. I honestly don't understand how Talk Radio has become the property of the far, far right. But this is not a fair comparison.
